Inner Paths to Outer Space (Park Street Press, 2008) combines the interests and expertise of four co-authors, including Dr. Strassman. The idea behind the book was originally conceived by the 2nd co-author, Dr. Slawek Wojtowicz, a hematology-oncology researcher, who is also a science fiction author and illustrator. He believed the science fiction community should be made aware of the results of the UNM DMT research, particularly regarding the experience of contact with “beings” which was reported so frequently.

Seeking a broad base, we then invited Dr. Luis Eduardo Luna, an anthropologist with extensive experience in the cross-cultural use of ayahuasca in shamanic and psychotherapeutic settings, to join us. Dr. Luna then suggested we add to our contributors Dr. Ede Frecksa, a Hungarian psychiatrist with a broad-based and wide-ranging perspective on quantum phenomena in psychiatric research and phenomenology, as well as shamanism. Each author contributes two to four chapters, resulting in a free-wheeling and stimulating presentation of some of the more intriguing implications of the original DMT research in particular, and that of the psychedelic experience in general.

Rick Strassman MD performed the first human studies with psychedelic drugs in the US in over 20 years. His research involved the powerful naturally-occurring compound, DMT – N,N-dimethyltryptamine. Led to this substance through his earlier study of the pineal gland as a potential biological locus for spiritual experiences, he administered several hundred doses to DMT to approximately 60 volunteers between 1990 and 1995. He wrote about this research in the popular book, DMT – The Spirit Molecule, now in its 15th printing. With three distinguished collaborators, he co-authored Inner Paths to Outer Space, which looks more carefully at the common “other worlds” experience volunteers typical of the DMT effect.

Since 1996, Dr. Strassman has been exploring models for the DMT effect, and has focused primarily on the Old Testament concept of prophecy. This is a spiritual experience which takes into account the apparently external, free-standing nature of the DMT “worlds,” in which one’s sense of self is highly preserved and interactive. This is in contrast to previous models that borrow more heavily from Eastern religious systems, ones that emphasize unitive, ego-dissolving experiences. In addition, the prophetic model deals directly with ethical and moral concerns, adding a crucial element to our ability to understand and integrate the content of the psychedelic experience. He is developing these ideas in his next book, The Soul of Prophecy, due to appear in 2011.

An investigation into experiences of other realms of existence and contact with otherworldly beings

• Examines how contact with alien life-forms can be obtained through the “inner space” dimensions of our minds

• Presents evidence that other worlds experienced through consciousness-altering technologies are often as real as those perceived with our five senses

• Correlates science fiction’s imaginal realms with psychedelic research

For thousands of years, voyagers of inner space–spiritual seekers, shamans, and psychoactive drug users–have returned from their inner imaginal travels reporting encounters with alien intelligences. Inner Paths to Outer Space presents an innovative examination of how we can reach these other dimensions of existence and contact otherworldly beings.

Based on their more than 60 combined years of research into the function of the brain, the authors reveal how psychoactive substances such as DMT allow the brain to bypass our five basic senses to unlock a multidimensional realm of existence where otherworldly communication occurs. They contend that our centuries-old search for alien life-forms has been misdirected and that the alien worlds reflected in visionary science fiction actually mirror the inner space world of our minds. The authors show that these “alien” worlds encountered through altered states of human awareness, either through the use of psychedelics or other methods, possess a sense of reality as great as, or greater than, those of the ordinary awareness perceived by our five senses.

Discover how science and spirituality are coming together to create a new vision of our world. We are undergoing a consciousness shift globally. This consciousness shift is highlighting our need to change our path from self-destruction, to become environmentally aware and collectively take responsibility for our universe.

What I learned from my personal journey in search of meaning:

• The map or paradigm on which Western society is based is obsolete.

• It does not take into account many of the scientific discoveries of the past century.

• There is evidence from science, psychology, and political and spiritual movements that this is so.

• Progressive scientists, who are conducting interdisciplinary research, are combining their knowledge.

• This research provides evidence for ancient spiritual and wisdom traditions.

• These experiments help to validate alternative medicines that are based on the energy field.

• There is a new paradigm currently evolving, which acknowledges a collective consciousness.

• Our thoughts feed into the collective consciousness.

• What we think matters.

• We are co-creating our reality.

• The emerging paradigm encompasses a holistic world vision based on cooperation and hope.

Awareness of the different elements of our conscious action and experience frees us from restricting attachments to them – from confining identification with anything we think, feel or do. This ‘Awareness Principle’ is both a liberatory life principle and a life practice of a sort long recognised in yogic philosophy. As well as being healing and freeing The Awareness Principle is also a new foundational principle for the sciences and religion – offering the sole possible philosophical basis for both a new Theology and a truly scientific ‘Theory of Everything’. For the most fundamental scientific fact is not the objective existence of a manifest universe but awareness of that universe.

Peter Wilberg’s writings on ‘The Awareness Principle’ reaffirm and re-articulate in a new and clear way a centuries-old understanding of Hindu tantric philosophy – namely that the ’1st Principle’ of the universe is not matter or energy but the innate potentials and power (Shakti) of pure awareness (Shiva).
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY Acharya Peter Wilberg is an Indian spiritual teacher reborn in North-West London in 1952 of German and German-Jewish parentage. Peter Wilberg’s past-life and inter-life spiritual knowledge, psychic abilities and profound intellect came to expression in his early childhood – during which he already cultivated and practiced advanced yogic powers or ‘Siddhis’. When only eight years old he spontaneously wrote an essay for his Religious Education class which expressed the essence of the Hindu- Tantric philosophy of time (Kaala), creative vibration (Spanda), and ‘energy’ (Shakti). Whilst still in primary school he practiced the yoga of dreaming – the ability to visualise and enter a dream directly from the waking state with his dream body – and retain full awareness within the dream. He also used daily classical music listening to cultivate a yoga of ‘inner sound’ and ‘feeling tone’. This involved using his face and eyes as an instrument by which to express, embody and amplify the inner music of the soul – its tonal qualities of feeling. Later he assiduously cultivated a new ‘yoga of the face’ with which, simply by meditating the ‘inner sound’ of their look and facial expression, he could directly sense the inner feeling tones or ‘soul’ of another person within his own body.

Acharya Peter Wilberg first practiced the yoga of ‘out-of-body’ travel as an adolescent. Yet in early adulthood, whilst studying philosophy at Oxford’s Magdalen College, he was a frequent invisible flyer over its quads. Whilst studying philosophy Acharya Peter Wilberg gave deep attention to Eastern as well as Western thought. His subsequent MA dissertation in Humanistic Psychology was an expression of his experience of the yoga of dreaming – being based on experiential research into inter-personal dimensions of ‘lucid dreaming’. In his own lucid dreams he encountered numerous teachers and Gurus, travelled beyond our planetary system and experienced planes of awareness beyond the dream state.

This phase of his work culminated in a single dream which led him beyond the dream state itself into a deeper layer of awareness and a profound trans-personal experience of his own ‘great soul’ or ‘Mahatma’. .From within it he was wordlessly imbued with its higher knowing or ‘Vijnana’, as well as being and instructed with his spiritual life-mission – that of re-conceptualising that knowing in a new, more refined ways. Over subsequent decades he therefore continued to practice and seek new ways of articulating his many self-discovered Yogas, in particular that of using his face and eyes to mirror the looks of others and sense their souls – feeling their own soul in his body and his own soul in theirs. As a result, in 1975 he had the first experience of what was to become the new mode of ‘Tantric Pair Meditation’ that he describes in his essays and books – a form of tantric union or ‘Maithuna’ that he has now practiced for over 30 years. Through it, he cultivated his most important ‘Siddhi’ – the capacity, through his inner gaze and inner touch, to not only embody different qualities and faces of the Divine-Universal Awareness, but also to channel them directly into the body of another – the mark of a teacher with powers of initiation.

It was out of this rich history of continuous yogic practice and aware inner experiencing that Acharya Peter Wilberg was able to fulfil his life-mission and to formulate, over many decades, the original Principles and Practices of Awareness which make up ‘The New Yoga’. In doing so, he has not only become the preceptor or Acharya of a new spiritual teaching. He has also become an empowered and initiatory ‘Guru’ (‘Siddha Guru’ or ‘Diksha Guru’) in the most traditional sense – capable not only of embodying Divine potentials and powers of awareness (‘Siddhis’) but also awakening them in others – thus bestowing initiation (‘Diksha’).

Together with his lifelong studies of both Indian and European philosophies, this extraordinary experiential history enabled Acharya Peter Wilberg to evolve, over several decades, the metaphysical principles and meditational practices which together make up what he calls ‘The New Yoga’ – a yoga of pure awareness (Shiva) and its innate potentials and powers of manifestation (Shakti).

Having a lifetime’s study of profound European thinkers and philosophies behind it, The New Yoga is – in the most literal sense – a European ‘reincarnation’ of the sublime tradition of tantric teachings known collectively as ‘Kashmir Shaivism’. For in the same spirit as its great 10th century adept and teacher – Acharya Abhinavagupta – Acharya Peter Wilberg has again, after a gap of ten centuries, further clarified and refined the principles and practices of this tradition. The New Yoga makes them profoundly relevant to today’s world – capable of being applied directly in everyday life and relationships as well as to numerous modern fields of knowledge. That is why, in addition to his many essays and books on The New Yoga, Acharya Peter Wilberg has also contributed several articles to journals of philosophical psychology, written countless essays and published a variety of books on themes ranging from science and religion to medicine and psychiatry, politics and economics, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy

Key Questions:

Question: How do you know that anything at all ‘is’ or exists?
Answer: Only through an awareness of it.

Question: How do you even know that you exist or ‘are’?
Answer: Only through an awareness of being.

Question: If this is so, how can that awareness be regarded as ‘yours’ – or as the property of any person, being or thing that we only know of through that awareness?

Answer: It cannot.

‘The Awareness Principle’ is the principle that awareness cannot – in principle – be explained by or reduced to the property or product of anything of which IT is aware – any self or world, body or being, even a Supreme Being or ‘Being’ as such.

On the contrary, every being is an individualised portion, expression and embodiment of a beginningless and boundless Awareness – a Universal Awareness Field that is beyond explanation.
The Awareness Principle is therefore the recognition that awareness alone is, in principle, the sole possible reality underlying and constituting all things, all beings and all worlds.

For again, its basic ‘principle’ is that awareness cannot – in principle – be explained by or reduced to the property or product of any thing or phenomenon, being or body, self or world, that we are aware of.

The Awareness Principle is thus also all of the following:

· The sole possible ‘Theory of Everything’.

· A Unified Field Theory of reality which recognises all things as the expression of a Universal Awareness Field.

· The foundation of a comprehensive set of Practices of Awareness with the power to transform our lives and our world through the cultivation of Unified Field Awareness.

· A radical re-interpretation of the fundamental nature of ‘God’ and ‘Spirit’, ‘Matter’ and ‘Energy’, ‘Space’ and ‘Time’, ‘Creation’ and ‘Evolution’, ‘Being’ and ‘Consciousness’, ‘Soul’ and ‘Body’, ‘Life’ and ‘Death’, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Enlightenment’.

· The Awareness Principle
transcends ‘science’ as we know it today, because it recognises that the most basic scientific ‘fact’ or ‘reality’ of all is not the ‘objective’ existence of a universe of matter and energy but a subjective awareness of such a universe.

· The Awareness Principle
transcends ‘psychology’ as we know it today, because it recognises that awareness is universal and all-pervasive in character – not a purely personal and privately owned ‘soul’ or ‘psyche’ that is bounded by our bodies or a mere product of our brains.

· The Awareness Principle
transcends ‘religion’ as we know it today, because it recognises that ‘God’ is not a ‘supreme being’ that simply happens to have or ‘possess’ awareness but rather than God is awareness – a universal awareness field of which all individual beings or ‘souls’ are a unique portion and personification, a unique expression and embodiment.

Mind and matter are connected through information at the atomic level

• Explains how your state of mind is profoundly related to the flow of chemical information during the interactions of your molecules

• Reveals how each atom of the universe is intrinsically linked with all other atoms through their memories and the information they carry

• Explores the concrete manifestations of this “molecular consciousness,” such as intuition and the appearance of life on Earth

The molecules of living organisms are in constant communication, storing and transmitting information both at the intracellular level as well as across vast distances. The mystery of how this communication occurs–whether through molecular structure, chemical reactions, entangled states, or some other method–has baffled biologists, chemists, and quantum physicists for more than a century.

Revealing the intimate connections between mind and matter, Françoise Tibika explains that conscious communication exists all the way down to the very molecules of which we–and the universe–are made. Using the fundamental laws of thermodynamics to support her argument–especially the first law: “energy is neither created nor destroyed”–as well as modern scientific research in quantum physics and molecular biology, Tibika explores how each imperishable atom of the universe is intrinsically linked with all other atoms through their memories and the information they carry. She shows not only how each atom of your being is part of the greater whole of the universe but also how your thoughts, feelings, and state of mind are profoundly related to the activity of each of your molecules. Just as we are undergoing constant transformation by the molecules surrounding us, our own molecules are continuously transforming the network of which we are a part.

Exploring the concrete manifestations of this molecular consciousness, such as intuition, Tibika reveals how, through effecting conscious change at the molecular level, our actions have far-reaching significance in a universe that is not blind to our presence.

Françoise Tibika, a student of famed kabbalist and mystic Colette Aboulker-Muscat, has a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Currently a lead researcher at the Institute of Chemistry at her alma mater, she lives in Jerusalem, Israel.

Is there a role for spirituality in a time of crisis? Can it be of help in facing and eventually overcoming the crisis?

The answer, given in the four stupendous contributions to this Round of the Forum on Science & Spirituality, is a resounding YES. Crisis is both danger and opportunity. The danger is that the systems that drive our world take us to a point of no return where the world collapses around us; and the opportunity is to change the dynamic of the systems so they would take us toward a world that is more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful. To achieve this “worldshift” we need both dependable information and deep insight: the former from science, and the latter from spirituality. We can’t make it without either of them. But with both, we have a chance.

Gregg Braden and Bruce Lipton diagnose the nature of the crisis in which we find ourselves and highlight the nature of the insights we need to cope with it. Joanna Macy and Duane Elgin offer specific advice regarding the insights and the practices we need to face the crisis. Together they paint a concise yet clear and trenchant image of what is wrong with the world, and how we could change our thinking and actions to right it.

When writing is as clear and pertinent as this, there is no need to comment. We cannot point to one or another of the elements of information and advice it conveys, we would need to point to all of it. But there is no need to cite the whole of these worldshifting blogs, for they can be read here in their entirety. And read and read. And taken to heart and to mind, so they could inspire our heart and inform our mind. With inspiration coming from the great spiritual traditions, and information from the leading edge of the sciences, we can empower ourselves to change, both profoundly and urgently. Then we have a chance to change the world.

The world needs to change, profoundly and urgently. And nothing and nobody could change it but us. ~ Dr. Ervin Lazlo

Three of the most original thinkers of our time explore issues that call into question our current views of reality, morality, and the nature of life.

• A wide-ranging investigation of the ecology of inner and outer space, the role of chaos theory in the dynamics of human creation, and the rediscovery of traditional wisdom.

In this book of “trialogues,” the late psychedelic visionary and shamanologist Terence McKenna, acclaimed biologist and originator of the morphogenetic fields theory Rupert Sheldrake, and mathematician and chaos theory scientist Ralph Abraham explore the relationships between chaos and creativity and their connection to cosmic consciousness. Their observations call into question our current views of reality, morality, and the nature of life in the universe.

Terence McKenna (l), Ralph Abraham (c) Rupert Sheldrake (r)

The authors challenge the reader to the deepest levels of thought with wide-ranging investigations of the ecology of inner and outer space, the role of chaos in the dynamics of human creation, and the resacralization of the world. Among the provocative questions the authors raise are: Is Armageddon a self-fulfilling prophecy? Are we humans the imaginers or the imagined? Are the eternal laws of nature still evolving? What is the connection between physical light and the light of consciousness?

Part ceremony, part old-fashioned intellectual discussion, these trialogues are an invitation to a new understanding of what Jean Houston calls “the dreamscapes of our everyday waking life.”

Richard Dawkins, bestselling author and the world’s most celebrated evolutionary biologist, has spent his career elucidating the many wonders of science. Here, he takes a broader approach and uses his unrivaled explanatory powers to illuminate the ways in which the world really works.

Filled with clever thought experiments and jaw-dropping facts, The Magic of Reality explains a stunningly wide range of natural phenomena: How old is the universe? Why do the continents look like disconnected pieces of a jigsaw puzzle? What causes tsunamis? Why are there so many kinds of plants and animals? Who was the first man, or woman? Starting with the magical, mythical explanations for the wonders of nature, Dawkins reveals the exhilarating scientific truths behind these occurrences.

This is a page-turning detective story that not only mines all the sciences for its clues but primes the reader to think like a scientist as well.

Richard Dawkins is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was the inaugural holder of the Charles Simonyi Chair of Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He is the acclaimed author of many books including The Selfish Gene, Climbing Mount Improbable, Unweaving the Rainbow, The Ancestor’s Tale, The God Delusion, and The Greatest Show on Earth. The Magic of Reality: How We Know What’s Really True by Richard Dawkins

What are things made of? What is the sun? Why is there night and day, winter and summer? Why do bad things happen? Are we alone? Throughout history people all over the world have invented stories to answer profound questions such as these. Have you heard the tale of how the sun hatched out of an emu’s egg? Or what about the great catfish that carries the world on its back? Has anyone ever told you that earthquakes are caused by a sneezing giant? These fantastical myths are fun – but what is the real answer to such questions? “The Magic of Reality”, with its explanations of space, time, evolution and more, will inspire and amaze readers of all ages – young adults, adults, children, octogenarians.

Teaming up with the renowned illustrator Dave McKean, Richard Dawkins answers all these questions and many more. In stunning words and pictures this book presents the real story of the world around us, taking us on an enthralling journey through scientific reality, and showing that it has an awe-inspiring beauty and thrilling magic which far exceed those of the ancient myths. We encounter rainbows, our genetic ancestors, tsunamis, shooting stars, plants, animals, and an intriguing cast of characters in this extraordinary scientific voyage of discovery. Richard Dawkins and Dave McKean have created a dazzling celebration of our planet that will entertain and inform for years to come.

Beautiful Minds: Richard Dawkins

Professor Richard Dawkins reveals how he came to write his explosive first book The Selfish Gene, a work that was to divide the scientific community and make him the most influential evolutionary biologist of his generation. He also explores how this set him on the path to becoming an outspoken spokesman for atheism.

Breaking The Spell

Breaking the Spell: An Exploration of Human Perception examines how people have become largely disconnected from a living, energetic universe through social conditioning. Over generations humanity has lost much of its creative spirit, imagination, and perceptual faculties.

In this book the author addresses how we should ‘break the spell’ of our conditioned perceptions and learn to manage and develop our emotional, mental, and physical energies. Through such chapters as Managing One’s Energy, Being Vigilant, and Stepping Away, the author explains in very simple language the necessity for each person to regain their focus, inner calm, and to observe the chaotic impacts that surround them. The author also discusses how a person can refine their perceptions through inner intent. The book also contains an inspiring collection of thoughts; and an Appendix on the misunderstandings of modern day spirituality.
In these distracting times it is imperative that each person learns to empower themselves by learning to harness and develop their personal energies. This timely book explains just how to ‘break the spell’ of our hypnotic world.
