Tal interés tiene  sin duda su origen en la investigación del grupo liderado por Antonio Damasio ,quien en su obra “El error de Descarte”s (Damasio. 1994) utilizo el vínculo entre la ��noción y la razón y destacó sobremanera el papel funcional jugado por la emoción en la toma de decisiones. El anailisis del caso de Phineas Gage, ha l levado a presumir que las lesiones sufridas por Gage afectaron de forma dramatica al COF (corteza orbito frontal) y a la CVM (cortex ventro medial). Entre los síntomas que presentan estos pacientes se observa una incapacidad para planificar sus acciones y tomar decisiones en el ambito personal y social. Damasio  ha presentado una teoría neuroanatómica sobre el papel  cru­cial de las emociones en el razonamiento y la toma de decisiones en” la hipotesis del marcador somatico”.  Esta teoría propone que los estados corporales elicitados por e�xperiencias pasadas de recompensa y castig,o guían los procesos de toma de decidiones de un modo adaptativo para el organismo. La anticipación de las posi­bles consecuencias de una elección genera respuestas somáticas de origen emo­cional que se traducen en cambios vegetativos, musculares. neuroendocrinos o neoropsicologicos que actuan como señales inconscientes que preceden a una elección (Bechara.
