Awareness Knows Itself by Itself ~ An interview with Rupert Spira

Published on Oct 15, 2014

In this interview Rupert Spira answers questions related to realization, individual character, mistaken projections onto spiritual teachers and more. Some of the questions discussed are: Is personal development necessary for realization? and Does awareness need an individual mind to know itself?

This interview is featured in the “Science and Nonduality Anthology Vol.4”.

From an early age Rupert was deeply interested in the nature of Reality. For twenty years he studied the teachings of Ouspensky, Krishnamurti, Rumi, Shankaracharya, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta and Robert Adams, until he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, twelve years ago. Francis introduced Rupert to the teaching of Jean Klein, Parmenides, Wei Wu Wei and Atmananda Krishnamenon and, more importantly, directly indicated to him the true nature of experience.

Rupert’s first book is “The Transparency of Things”, subtitled “Contemplating the Nature of Experience”. His second book, Presence Volume I The Art of Peace and Happiness and Presence Volume II The Intimacy of All Experience has been currently released by Non-Duality Press.

Avatars, Gods and Goddesses of Vedic Culture: Understanding the Characteristics, Powers and Positions of the Hindu Divinities by Stephen Knapp (Author)

Understanding the assorted Divinities or gods and goddesses of the Vedic or Hindu pantheon is not so difficult as some people may think when it is presented simply and effectively. And that is what you will find in this book. This will open you to many of the possibilities and potentials of the Vedic tradition, and show how it has been able to cater to and fulfill the spiritual needs and development of so many people since time immemorial. Here you will find there is something for everyone. This takes you into the heart of the deep, Vedic spiritual knowledge of how to perceive the Absolute Truth, the Supreme and the various powers and agents of the universal creation. This explains the characteristics and nature of the Vedic Divinities and their purposes, powers, and the ways they influence and affect the natural energies of the universe. It also shows how they can assist us and that blessings from them can help our own spiritual and material development and potentialities, depending on what we need.

Some of the Vedic Divinities that will be explained include Lord Krishna, Vishnu, Their main avatars and expansions, along with Brahma, Shiva, Ganesh, Murugan, Surya, Hanuman, as well as the goddesses of Sri Radha, Durga, Sarasvati, Lakshmi, and others. This also presents explanations of their names, attributes, dress, weapons, instruments, the meaning of the Shiva lingam, and some of the legends and stories that are connected with them. This will certainly give you a new insight into the expansive nature of the Vedic tradition.

Stephen Knapp grew up in a Christian family, during which time he seriously studied the Bible to understand its teachings. In his late teenage years, however, he sought answers to questions not easily explained in Christian theology. So he began to search through other religions and philosophies from around the world and started to find the answers for which he was looking. He also studied a variety of occult sciences, ancient mythology, mysticism, yoga, and the spiritual teachings of the East. After his first reading of the Bhagavad-gita, he felt he had found the last piece of the puzzle he had been putting together through all of his research. Therefore, he continued to study all of the major Vedic texts of India to gain a better understanding of the Vedic science.

It is known amongst all Eastern mystics that anyone, regardless of qualifications, academic or otherwise, who does not engage in the spiritual practices described in the Vedic texts cannot actually enter into understanding the depths of the Vedic spiritual science, nor acquire the realizations that should accompany it. So, rather than pursuing his research in an academic atmosphere at a university, Stephen directly engaged in the spiritual disciplines that have been recommended for hundreds of years. He continued his study of Vedic knowledge and spiritual practice under the guidance of a spiritual master.

Through this process, and with the sanction of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, he became initiated into the genuine and authorized spiritual line of the Brahma-Madhava-Gaudiya sampradaya, which is a disciplic succession that descends back through Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Vyasadeva, the compiler of Vedic literature, and further back to Sri Krishna. Through this initiation he has taken the spiritual name of Sri Nandanandana dasa. Besides being brahminically initiated, Stephen has also been to India numerous times and traveled extensively throughout the country, visiting all but three small states, and most of the major holy places, thus gaining a wide variety of spiritual experiences that only such places can give. Stephen has put the culmination of over forty years of continuous research and travel experience into his books in an effort to share it with those who are also looking for spiritual understanding.

Consciousness Encounters Quantum Physics: A Scientific Argument for Panpsychism ~ Shan Gao

Consciousness is the most familiar phenomenon. Yet it is the hardest one to explain. Even today, it is still unclear whether and how consciousness emerges from mere matter or whether consciousness is a fundamental property of matter. The crux of the issue is to decide if consciousness has causal efficacies in the physical world, which is not classical but quantum at the deepest level. If consciousness is fundamental as panpsychism holds, then the fundamental consciousness property should take part in the causal chains of the quantum world and should present itself in our investigation of the world. Is consciousness causally efficient in the quantum world then? How to find the quantum physical effects of consciousness if they indeed exist?

This book will propose a promising solution to the hard problem of consciousness by investigating the possible quantum effects of consciousness. Admittedly, it has been a hot topic of debate whether there is a subtle connection between quantum physics and consciousness. Different from the existing speculations, the analysis of the book is based on the well-accepted assumption that quantum processes such as quantum measurements are objective physical processes, independent of the consciousness of observers. To our great surprise, however, this banal assumption may have profound implications for the nature of consciousness. For it implies that a conscious being can distinguish definite perceptions and their quantum superpositions under certain conditions, while a measuring system without consciousness cannot distinguish such quantum states. The existence of this distinct physical effect of consciousness further implies that consciousness is not emergent but a fundamental feature of the universe. This provides a convincing scientific argument for panpsychism.

The main ideas of this book have been published in professional journals such as Minds and Machines, and will soon be introduced in the prestigious Journal of Consciousness Studies. Although the book places priority on the rigor of the scientific arguments, its contents are basically comprehensible to general readers. This little book will appeal to all those who have been looking for a real understanding of the mysterious universe.

Shan Gao is a theoretical physicist and philosopher of physics at the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy of Physics from University of Sydney. His major interests are foundations of quantum mechanics, philosophy of physics, history of modern physics, and philosophy of mind. His original ideas, including random discontinuous motion, quantum superluminal communication and quantum panpsychism, have been published in professional journals such as Foundations of Physics, Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics, Proceedings of the Royal Society A, Minds and Machines, Journal of Consciousness Studies, and so on. He is the author of God Does Play Dice with the Universe, Quantum Physics: From Illusion to Reality, Understanding Quantum Physics: An Advanced Guide for the Perplexed and several other books. His first popular science book Quantum: A Historical and Logical Journey (in Chinese) is very successful, and it has sold more than ten thousands copies in China during the last few years. His new edited book Protective Measurements and Quantum Reality: Toward a New Understanding of Quantum Mechanics will be published in 2014 by Cambridge University Press, and the list of contributors includes Yakir Aharonov et al. Light in the Night: Spirit Photography at The Cottage Lois Anne Smith

Light in the Night contains stunning photographic evidence of the light-filled beings that medium Lois Anne Smith says have always been with her. The pictures were taken in the gardens surrounding her small healing center located in the quiet community of Valley Mede, Maryland.

It never occurred to her to share them in book form until the summer of 2013 when, standing in the middle of the garden, she asked out loud, “Where is everyone?” She had enjoyed three years of capturing extraordinary evidence that she was surrounded by light and love, even in-especially in-the darkness. The past six months of barely seeing a small orb felt as though someone had flipped a switch, and it was over. The answer came immediately, “My dear, you haven’t done anything with the ones we’ve given you.”

She now makes these amazing photos available to us all, along with deeply personal stories that are sure to lift your spirit and remind us all that when the journey is about love and the entire universe supports and encourages us.

Lois Anne is an experienced medium and author who uses her gift to bridge the physical and spiritual realms in an atmosphere of love and understanding for the purpose of bringing clarity, healing, and connection to those on both sides of the veil.

A gifted facilitator of healing, Lois Anne is passionate about helping others identify and shift old energy imprints (thoughts, feelings, beliefs) and re-awaken to their own truth.

Lois is a published author and certified Ama~Deus Instructor (one of five accredited in North America by the International Ama~Deus Association). She has studied with international mediums and healers from around the globe although it is her own healing journey that has taught her to embrace others with gentleness and compassion. She has been in the healing arts community for more than 25 years. Lois maintains a continued commitment to her own journey and a deep passion to help all who come to The Cottage.

Teal was born in Santa Fe New Mexico in the year 1984.
In the first years of her life, it became apparent that she had been born with extrasensory abilities. It was because of Teal’s extrasensory abilities that she was taken as a child (unbeknownst to her parents) into a local cult called The Blood Covenant by a family acquaintance (who was a sociopath with dissociative identity disorder) and was ritualistically tortured for thirteen years. She managed to escape from the cult when she was 19 years old. Since then, Teal has become a “spiritual catalyst” both accepting and utilizing her abilities to remind people of the united, energetic, nature of this universe and to teach people how to find bliss in the midst of even the most extreme circumstances.

Venus Debilitated | Combust | With Rahu in Exchange With Retrograde Mercury ~ Sam Geppi

Venus is currently Venus Debilitated, Combust, With Rahu and in an Exchange With Retrograde Mercury. Venus is the planet we use mostly as adults when interacting with each other. Whether it is in business or romantic relationships, the main skill we use is mutual respect.

When we are able to honor another person’s wishes equal to our own, smooth personal and business relationships follow. When we either compromise too much, and sell ourselves short – or assert our position with too much passion, both business and personal relationships suffer.

At the heart of the matter is happiness and the desire that follows the wispy promise of what makes us happy. Beauty, love, harmony are all universal principles that has their origin in the venus principle. But how high of a price are we willing to pay for those things? Are we selling our principles down the drain to get them?

Currently these issues are confused and confusing as there are several different stresses on Venus.

Venus Debilitated in Virgo
When Venus is in Virgo we may be acutely aware of all the many reasons why we are not happy and all of the many imperfections of those around us who just don;t seem to get it. I mean really what is wrong with these people, clearly they are here to make YOU happy, right?

Venus Combust / Close to the Sun
When Venus is combust it is very close to the Sun, creating a sort of “cosmic sunburn” on these issues of respect. Think of all you do, and yet all people do is ask for more. “Combustion” is one of the “Deeptadi Avasthas”, called “Kopa” (Angry / frustrated).

Venus joined Rahu
Rahu creates confusion with these issues of self-respect and compromise with others. It also explodes desires and distorts the issues and may have you quickly accelerating and escalating things sexually with another – or frustrated because that is not happening.

Venus Exchanging with Retrograde Mercury
Venus is in Mercury’s sign and Mercury is in Venus’ sign. This exchange creates a dialogue between these two forces. Mercury shows flexibility with others and works hand in hand with Venus, as we navigate the slippery slope and ever-changing landscape of mutual desires. Given that Mercury is also retrograde now, there is confusion about how to process, communicate or understand what is being asked of us now, in relation to others.
