Tara O’Toole-Conn was a social sciences and art major at Rutgers University in New Jersey and Florida International University. She began her career as a legal assistant with several prestigious Pittsburgh- and Philadelphia-based law firms. She is a former painter, ceramist, and sculptor. She takes pleasure in many music genres, theater, reading, and journaling. She has an ongoing passion for human and spiritual development; she is an Usui Reiki Master and a Pilates enthusiast.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tara now resides in Louisville, Kentucky. She is the widow and former caregiver for her beloved husband, Peter D. Conn. Although she had no former expertise in caregiving or the field of spiritual communications, it was the human, compromised suffering her husband remained in for years preceding his transition that brought her to the pages of Our Grand Journey of Self-Exploration. Buried Treasures: The Journey From Where You Are to Who You Are by Guru Singh (Author)


Buried Treasures is the confluence of two great spiritual rivers that led to the fulfilling of the author’s destiny — a near death experience and the vision quests of an indigenous village of Mexico. Buried Treasures is the story of 3 years in the early adult life of Guru Singh (the book’s author). Gerry Pond (Guru Singh) was twenty years old when he died in a Seattle hospital from a ruptured appendix. Guru Singh – born 1945, is a third-generation yogi and master teacher of Kundalini Yoga, meditation, mantra and ‘humanology’. His ancestry studied in India with spiritual masters in the early 20th century and brought this passion for consciousness into his home as a young child. He teaches a practical path to an enlightened household and success in life using these ancient technologies that are completely applicable in today’s world. This brings fulfillment into this busy world and he does this teaching with his wife Guruperkarma Kaur. He is also a musician, composer, author, and minister of Sikh Dharma based in Los Angeles, Seattle and India. She spent years traveling around the world trying on different roles and identities to see if any of them fit. Disappointed with each role, she continued searching to find a way out of the pain she felt. She spent some time in the Osho centre in Pune, India, and there discovered meditation, free expression, and other insightful wisdom. But although this brought her more relaxation, it did not seem to get to the root of her search. Some years later she met the German Zen master, Dolano. With her, Unmani recognized that what she had been searching for had always been right here. She woke up to the dream, time stopped and the search ended. She no longer needed to try to fit in or be someone, because Unmani had finally acknowledged the truth of who she really is. Unmani began holding meetings and retreats 3 years later. Don’t Get Stuck in the Absolute by Unmani

Knowing that you are the Absolute, is not about denying this human-animal. This denial seems to be a phase that many people go through when they start to explore their true nature. In fact it seems to be almost a necessary phase in order to truly acknowledge the Absolute nature of who you are. You go from believing that who you are is limited to this body, to seeing that you are not what you thought you were. You are the Absolute unlimited Emptiness of Life itself. Then the thinking creeps back in to start to call this new state of being something. It starts to limit it without even realising that it has created a subtle new limited identity. This is the superior and very special spiritual identity that denies the ordinary personal human stuff by saying that there is only the Absolute. Only certain peaceful relaxing experiences are considered ‘how it should be’, and any other experiences are considered ‘not it’.

Don’t get stuck in the Absolute. Don’t get stuck in this one-sided view. Don’t start to get comfortable in thinking that you know how it is and who you really are. This is only a new trick of the mind. Lose all ideas of even the Absolute, and whatever you have experienced in recognising that. Lose it all and keep losing it all. There is no need to keep chasing experiences of the Absolute, or reciting nondual concepts about the Absolute. If you really know yourself to be the Absolute, then you don’t need to keep reminding yourself of that. You can let it go and relax, knowing that it will never let you go.

Then it seems that you come full circle back to the relative. Back to the human-animal thing and all its foibles. Knowing that you are the Absolute is the freedom to fully explore, feel and experience this human-animal experience just as it is. Nothing is denied. Everything is included in who you are. There is no one special experience that is better than any other. Even experiences of recognising that you are unlimited, are sweet gifts, but are essentially just limited temporary experiences. The Absolute nature of who you are includes every single human experience as it is, without exception. This recognition does not fit into our ideas of how it should look like or feel like. It is rebellious, radical unlimited freedom despite experiences of feeling limited.

It’s Time to Tell the Truth ~ Gangaji

Over the years of traveling around and speaking with people, I have seen that there is clearly a deep, strong, and true desire to wake up, whatever that means to any particular individual. There is a true desire to realize God, to realize truth, to stop the violence, to stop the hatred, to stop the suffering, and to wake up to what is possible in this lifetime. If you want to awaken one hundred percent, if that has priority over everything else, then immediately you are awake. That’s the truth. I stake my life on it. My life is a guarantee that if you want to awaken to your true nature, if you want that totally, you will awaken to your true nature.

The biggest obstacle to awakening I’ve seen so far is that awakening is actually wanted for something else. Awakening is wanted for feeling better, or so that you don’t have to be the same person you think you are now, or to get some recognition, or to forget all the bad things that you have done or that have been done to you. Awakening is wanted as a vehicle or a tool, and there is frustration that this tool is not given to you. This doesn’t work. Truth must be desired for itself, regardless of any consequences that might follow. This is a shocking truth. We are so used to wanting something to make our personal lives better, and God knows, we have tried. Luckily, most of us have become deeply disillusioned with the possibility of getting rescued, of getting something else that will fulfill this true desire to awaken.

I am asking you to look inside, to be ruthlessly, relentlessly honest and truthful with yourself, to see why you want to awaken. What will awakening give you? If your answer is something beautiful or grandiose or altruistic, such as peace on Earth or harmony among all people, put that aside for just a moment and see if truth, this unknown state of awakening, is desired for itself, regardless of consequences. I am asking you to tell the truth. We spend most of our lives lying in both gross and subtle ways. The lying gets very intricate, and the web gets tighter, and you know this.

There is an opportunity now, in this moment, to discover what is it you want for its own sake, without getting any comfort from it, without it taking care of anything. I can feel the fear that this evokes. This is not a usual consideration. It’s very easy to play in the drama of awakening, saying, “Oh, I’ll get it someday,” or “He has it,” or “She has it and I will just be in the aura of it, then I can keep my lies and my web.”

You are an adult. It is time to tell the truth. I am asking you to tell me what it is you want truly for its own sake, and if you still imagine somehow you don’t have that, let me know what you imagine keeps you from it. Let’s examine it and see, is that obstruction to truth real or is it part of the webbing, part of the fabric of your imagination.

The True Nature of Experience

Our Essential Nature of Being, Knowing and Happiness

Let us start with our self. What can we say for certain about ‘I,’ our self, the subject, the one that knows experience? The first thing is that I am obviously present – I am. If I were not present I wouldn’t be aware of these words. And the second self-evident fact about our self is that I am aware or knowing. If this were not true I would not be aware of thoughts, sensations or perceptions.

In other words, I am and the ‘I’ that I am, is aware that I am. This knowing of our own being – its knowing of itself – is the most familiar, intimate and obvious fact of experience and is shared by all.

This present and aware ‘I’ is sometimes referred to as ‘Awareness’, which means the ‘presence of that which is aware’. It is a word in which the two fundamental qualities of our self – being and knowing – are recognized as one.

What else can we know for certain from experience about our self? ‘I’ am aware of thoughts, sensations and perceptions but am not made out of a thought, sensation or perception. ‘I’ am made out of pure being and knowing.

As such ‘I’ could be likened to an open, empty space to which or in which the objects of the mind, body and world (thoughts, sensations and perceptions) appear. And just as empty space, relatively speaking, cannot resist or be agitated by the appearance or activity of any object within it, so the open, empty space of Awareness cannot resist or be disturbed by any appearance of the mind, body or world, irrespective of their particular quality or condition. This inherent absence of resistance is the experience of happiness; this imperturbability is peace. This happiness and peace are not dependent upon the condition of the mind, body or world and are present in and as the essential nature of Awareness under all conditions and in all circumstances.

Thus happiness and peace, as well as being and knowing, are essential to our true nature.

The Birth and Death of the Separate Self

With this apparent veiling of the true and only self of Awareness, a separate, limited self seems to come into existence, just as a real landscape seems to come into existence when the screen is overlooked.

And with the apparent veiling of our true nature, the peace and happiness that are the natural condition of all experience seem also to be veiled. It is for this reason that there is always a deep pain in the heart of the separate self – the pain of separate existence. Most people’s lives are spent trying to ease or numb the pain of this separation through substances, objects, activities and relationships.

In short, the imaginary separate self is always seeking peace, happiness and love in an outside object, other or world. However, the separate self cannot find peace, happiness and love because its apparent existence is the veiling of it. At the same time peace, happiness and love is all the separate self seeks.

The longing of the separate self is like a moth that seeks a flame. The flame is all that the moth desires and the one thing it cannot have. As the moth touches the flame it dies. That is the moth’s way of experiencing the flame – by dying in it. And that is the separate self’s way of experiencing peace, happiness and love – by dissolving or dying.

All separate selves seek only the end of seeking; all separate selves long only for the end of longing; all separate selves desire only to dissolve or die. That death – the death of the separate self – is the experience of peace, happiness and love, the unveiling of our essential nature, its ‘remembering’ of itself.

However, as we have seen, the separate self is only a real self from its own illusory point of view. How can an illusion die if it is not real to begin with? It cannot! It can only be seen to be utterly non-existent.

If the separate self were real it would be impossible to get rid of it because that which is real cannot disappear. And fortunately, that which is unreal, such as a separate self, object, other or world, never truly comes into existence.

Therefore, no activity or cessation of the mind’s activity can bring about this understanding. All that is required is to have the courage, honesty and love to look, to see clearly, and to live the implications of what we discover.

The true and only self of Awareness has no knowledge of any limit or destiny within itself. It knows that it is infinite and eternal. It is only thoughts and feelings that say otherwise. A deep exploration of these thoughts and feelings will reveal that they do not reflect the true nature of our experience.

When our self is relieved of the beliefs and feelings of lack and limitation with which it has been apparently veiled, it stands revealed as the true and only self of ever-present and unlimited Awareness.

Let us explore the other side of the fundamental presumption of our culture – the independently existing outside object, other or world.

Our only experiential knowledge of the world is perception – sights, sounds, tastes, textures and smells. In fact, nobody has ever found an independently existing object or world; all that is ever found are perceptions. We cannot therefore even say we have perceptions of the world because that world has never been found. We can only say for sure that we know perceptions. And perceptions are never known independently of Awareness.

This is the startling but simple fact of experience that our culture has not yet faced: matter, the dead inert stuff out of which the independently existing universe is supposed to be made, has never been found. Matter is a concept, a valuable concept that is useful as a working model in some situations, but nevertheless a concept. It has never been found. Nor will it ever be found for whatever is found is, by definition, never known independently of Awareness.

In fact, even the model of thoughts, sensations and perceptions appearing inAwareness does not stand up to the scrutiny of experience. It is a half way stage that dissolves the belief in the independent reality of matter and mind and establishes the presence and the primacy of Awareness. But once this has been established, not philosophically but in our actual experience, this model too has to be abandoned in favor of one that more accurately reflects the reality of experience.

All we know of a thought is the experience of thinking, all we know of a sensation is the experience of sensing, all we know of a sight is the experiencing of seeing, all we know of a sound is the experience of hearing etc.

And all that is known of thinking, sensing, seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and smelling is the knowing of them. And what is it that knows this knowing? Only something that itself has the capacity to know could know anything. So it is knowing that knows knowing.

All that is ever known is pure knowing, knowing and being itself. And that knowing is your self. All that is known is Awareness knowing itself, the self knowing the self.

There is only your self – not a self that belongs to any object or person because there are no objects or people as such to which it could belong. This knowing belongs to itself alone. It is itself and knows itself alone. There are no others or objects there, no inside self or outside world.

And what is the name we commonly give to this absence of otherness, distance, separation and objectness? It is beauty or love.

Beauty is the discovery that objects are not objects; love is the discovery that others are not others.

The revelation of our true nature as it is puts an end to one chapter of our life, the chapter in which we believe ourselves to be separate selves born into a world, moving, changing, growing old and destined for death. But it is only the beginning of another chapter.

The next chapter is the realization of this understanding in all realms of our life, not just the way we think, but the way we feel, sense, perceive, act and relate. It is a never-ending process in which every aspect of experience is gradually permeated by the peace of our true nature.

In ignorance – when the true nature of our experience is ignored – our self, Awareness, seems to take on the intermittent, limited qualities of the mind, body and world. It seems to become something.

In understanding our self, Awareness, is realized to be the open, empty field of experience, not made of a thing but knowing all seeming things. As such it isnothing – not a thing.

In love, the mind, body and world gradually take on the qualities of Awareness – they become open, empty, transparent, pervaded and saturated by the peace and happiness that are our true nature. As such our self, the open, empty no-thingness of Awareness is realized in our experience as the reality or substance of everything.

The path from ‘I am something’ to ‘I am nothing’ is a path of discrimination or exclusion – I am not this, not this, not this. The path from ‘I am something’ to ‘I am everything’ is a path of inclusion or love – I am this and this and this.

Postscript – Knowledge and Love

True knowledge is the experiential understanding that there is only ever-present, unlimited Awareness or Knowing. Nothing other than this is ever known even when it seems that a mind, body and world are known. This ever-present, unlimited Awareness, which is simply the intimacy of our own being, is the fundamental nature of the apparently inside self and its corollary, the apparently outside object, other or world.

All religions are founded upon this understanding. In Christianity it is expressed as, “I and my Father are one.” That is, I, Awareness, and the ultimate reality of the universe are one and the same reality. In Buddhism, “Nirvana and Samsara are identical.” That is, the transparent, open, empty light of Awareness which is not made out of any kind of a thing – nothing – is the substance of all appearances – everything. Nothing taking the shape of everything. In Hinduism, “Atman and Param-Atman are one.” That is, the individual self, when divested of superimposed beliefs and feelings of limitation, stands revealed as the true and only self of eternal, infinite Awareness. And in Sufism, “Wherever the eye falls, there is the face of God.” All that is seen is God’s face and it is God that sees it.

All these phrases are conditioned by the culture in which they appeared but they all point towards the same unconditional truth – the reality of all experience.

The realization of this truth dissolves the beliefs in distance, separation and otherness. The common name we give to this absence of distance, separation and otherness is love and beauty. It is that for which everyone longs – not just those of us that are interested in non-duality but all seven billion of us.

In this realization true knowledge and love are revealed to be one and the same – the experiential realization that the true nature of the apparently inside self and the apparently outside world are one single reality made out of the transparent light of Awareness, that is, made out of the intimacy of our own being.

This revelation of understanding and love strikes at the heart of the fundamental presumption upon which our world culture is founded, the presumption of duality – I, the separate inside self, and you or it, the separate outside object, other or world. All conflicts within ourselves and between individuals, communities and nations are based upon this presumption alone and all psychological suffering proceeds from it.

Any approach to these conflicts that does not go to the heart of the matter will postpone but not solve the problem of conflict and suffering. Sooner or later as individuals and as a culture we have to have the courage, the humility, the honesty and the love to face this fact.

The highest purpose of all art, philosophy, religion and science is to reveal this truth in an experiential manner although all these disciplines have temporarily forgotten this in our culture. However, it may not be long. As the painter Paul Cezanne said, “A time is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will trigger a revolution”.

This is the only true revolution, the revolution in which our view of reality is turned upside down. Awareness – pure Knowing – is not just the witness of experience. It is its substance, its very nature. Everything changes when we begin to live from this point of view. We realize that what we have always longed for in life was present all along in the depths of our own being. It is always available, never truly veiled. To begin with it is often felt as peace in the background of experience but it cannot be contained and before long it begins to flow out into the world as joy, freedom, love and creativity.

From an early age Rupert was deeply interested in the nature of Reality. For twenty years he studied the teachings of Ouspensky, Krishnamurti, Rumi, Shankaracharya, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta and Robert Adams, until he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, twelve years ago. Francis introduced Rupert to the teaching of Jean Klein, Parmenides, Wei Wu Wei and Atmananda Krishnamenon and, more importantly, directly indicated to him the true nature of experience. Many people — including Oprah — have used the words “spirit” and “soul” interchangeably, but to do so isn’t quite accurate, according to one religious scholar. Thomas Moore has been a lifelong spiritual seeker and teacher who spent 13 years as a Catholic monk before earning his PhD in religious studies, and as he explains on an episode of “SuperSoul Sunday,” the spirit and the soul are actually two very different things.

“The spirit is that part of us and part of our life that wants more, that wants to transcend, that wants to grow, that wants to move into a better world, that wants to improve ourselves,” Moore says. “So, even going to school might be a movement of the spirit… Or picking up a book you want to read.”

The soul, on the other hand, thrives on something other than transcendence and knowledge.

“The soul — the deep soul — has more to do with things that are very ordinary, part of ordinary life that you feel intimately,” Moore says. “The first point about the soul, is the soul needs a home. It needs a sense of home.

“We all may be looking for a place where we can say, ‘I’m in the right part of the world,’ or, ‘I’m in the right town or the right area or the right house,'” he continues. “That sense of home, of being there where you need to be, this is a very ancient idea. That is kind of a basis for the soul: to really feel at home.”

A home isn’t all the soul needs, Moore adds. It also thrives on attachment.

“The soul will attach itself,” he says. “Soul mates, we’re attached to that person… And we’re attached to families and to our kids and to pets and to things — even objects, even things that we own. We become attached. That’s a sign of a real soulful life, that you’re able to make that attachment.”

On the contrary, the spirit likes to be detached and seek transcendence, as it has done from the day we were born, Moore says.

“We are spiritual, it’s a natural thing. I don’t think that you have to be taught to be spiritual,” he explains. “You already are. If you’ve ever just walked through a garden and stopped to look at a flower or something and be taken in by it, that’s a spiritual act, right there.”

What you are longing for is what you are and have always been. No longer deny and no longer ignore your very wisdom heart. There is nothing to acquire, self-realisation is beyond any domain of attaining or doing. It is a revelation, a realisation of the undividable, all pervading mystery. A shift of perspective, a shift from I to Thou. I, your point of reference evaporates, and you are no longer anchored in I, but in the heart of all.
I, the root of all delusion and suffering, is an imagined separation from totality. We have come to see ourselves as an aspect of life, but we are life itself. The ensuing loneliness and constant craving push more and more people into a journey to search for the missing part, whereas all it takes is a shift of perspective. In this shift I cannot continue. I simply dissolves and your being comes to rest in All. Once this standpoint dissolves, your view becomes wide open and ideas become objects to play with.

You come to live your best life, where all your qualities are fully expressed. Nothing needs to be avoided or suppressed any more. You are simply present, simply aware. There is no more fight and no more fear. Having entered the gate of the fulfilled heart, living this mystery, results in a different quality of perception. It is a stilled open presence where nothing needs to be protected anymore. What a relief, home at last, doubtlessly resting in the liberating realisation never having been away from yourself.

What awakening is cannot be described – words cannot approach the great mystery.
This mystery has no character and no form. No name will do – and all names will do.

Although words cannot convey this mysterious awakened presence, they work well enough as pointers. The enlightened speech of the awakened one is charged with transformative power. This empowerment serves the one who sincerely longs to awaken, advancing the eradication of ignorance and thus awakening one’s inherent Buddha nature.

Everybody is enlightened, realising this is all it takes. The difference between the seeker and the awakened one is that in the latter there is not a trace of doubt, denial or avoiding of one’s essential nature.

The awakened one – as living stillness – is fully present and allows all of life to come and to go. Peace is their home, since clinging to past, future and even this very moment has been erased. I – the root of all delusion and suffering – is an imagined separation from totality. We have come to see ourselves as an aspect of life, whereas we are life itself.

The ensuing loneliness and constant craving push more and more people into a journey to search for the missing part, while all it takes is a change in perspective, a shift from I to Thou. Rather than viewing yourself as a seeker, ever grasping for a distant horizon, see yourself as an awakening being, allowing the radiance of your wisdom-heart to fully permeate you.

No strategy, mental construction or conclusion will give you what has always been. You need to lay down all sense of doing and improvement. You need to lay down resistance and your inner fight. Allow your mind to rest in your heart, listen within, your heart knows beyond understanding.

At some moment, stilled in time, universal Buddha nature will be revealed. This happens by itself, to itself, in you. This revelation is the realisation of the undividable, all-pervading One. Your point of reference evaporates and you are no longer anchored in I, but in the heart of all.

You realise that I has been an assumption, an idea, the first idea from which all ideas emerge. I has never been. It was only ever imagined.

When the painful sense of separation and loneliness has evaporated and you are no longer ruled by the standpoint of deprivation, your life becomes soft, light and joyful. Nothing needs to be avoided or suppressed anymore. There is no more fight and no more fear. You are simply present, simply aware, merged with all and everything.

You live your best life, with a clear mind and a warm heart, where all your qualities fully bloom. You are free of apparent entanglement and there is no more identification with ideas, feelings or your physical appearance.

What a relief, home at last, doubtlessly resting in the liberating realisation of never having been away from yourself. Your painful sense of a separate self dissolved in the ocean of everything.

Waking Up From The Biggest Illusion In The World By Frank M. Wanderer, Ph.D


We live here on Earth, together with billions of fellow human beings. That we live is an irrefutable empirical fact. Similarly, the fact that other people live on Earth, too, is also an empirical fact.

We do not merely live, however, but we are also personalities. We are personalities who are similar to each other in various respects, and largely different from each other in other respects. That we are personalities, different from each other is also an empirical fact for us.

Out of these two experiences, however, only one is true, the other is deception. Only one is a fact, the other is an illusion, and the biggest illusion in the world at that.

The Beginnings of the Illusion

Let us take a closer look and examine which of the two experiences is true and which is a mere illusion.

Our life in this world begins when we are born. It is obvious that we are alive, but we are not yet a personality. At that time only the simplicity and greatness of the present moment, of existence, is known to us.

The society, and its culture, is what shapes us into personalities while we grow up. We become a personality when our Ego is born. This is an inevitable step in the evolution of the Consciousness, so there is nothing wrong with that. The Ego is born, the separate little Self, as a focus of the Consciousness. That little Self obtains experience about itself and the world. In the natural course of evolution and as a result of the experience gathered, the Ego withdraws to give way to the process as a result of which Consciousness awakens to its own existence through a human form.

The progress of this evolutionary process can, however, be impeded by an illusion: the illusion that the individual is becoming somebody, a personality. We begin to become somebody, a personality, when we start to identify with the Ego, with that separate little Self. Under that illusion we believe that the Ego is a reality, and we are identical with the Ego, and the development of the separate little Self is in fact the foundation of our personal development. Nowadays it is virtually impossible to avoid that kind of illusion, since mankind has lived in it for thousands of years. The deception has become independent, and the illusion of the Ego is now a reality for the entire mankind, including, naturally, us.

The Nature of the Illusion

Our identification with the Ego makes us therefore somebody, a personality. On the other hand, our identification with the Ego will be the root of all our problems and misery. Since around us everybody considers the Ego as the most important centre of their life, we are also brought up by our parents to have a powerful Ego, a centrepoint in our life, by the time we reach adulthood. It is necessary because our society–and its culture–favors and worships the individuals with a powerful Ego.

Our parents and teachers bring us up in the spirit of the permanent endeavors to become somebody, to become a strong personality, to become somebody different from what are now (to become bigger, more important and better than other people). That is why we always watch the other people, we compare and measure ourselves to them. All that time, we also try to adjust our actions and deeds to the expectations and opinions of others. We keep dealing with the past and the future, and we never have sufficient time to stop and notice the immense illusion behind our life.

The End of the Illusion

An illusion may only survive if it is continually fanned and nourished. If we take a look around through innocent eyes (that is, through eyes free of any kind of opinions) we will soon realize how every society nourishes and fans, through its various institutions, the illusion of the separate little Self, the Ego. How they nourish the illusion of ”somebodyness” in us and in everybody else. All that may take place because every society, every culture is based upon individuals, and if those individuals disappear, they wake up from their ”somebodyness,” the former modus operandi of that society collapses.

That is why Eckhart Tolle is perfectly right when he asserts that the world can only change from inside. The internal change means that we wake up from our ”somebodyness” and we begin to understand what our mission is in the evolutionary progress of the Consciousness.

We must therefore wake up from the illusion of our ”somebodyness” in order to concentrate our attention on reality. That reality is nothing but the innermost empirical fact in our life, that is, the fact that we live, and we constitute a vibrating Consciousness, full of life. That is the reality that has been shrouded from us by the illusion, the mistake that we concentrated all our efforts on sustaining our ”somebodyness.”

If we stop nourishing that illusion, it will vanish after a while. In order to sever the power line of the illusion, we must learn how to notice the vividness and beauty of the present moment. Once we are able to accept the present moment, we are able to accept ourselves and we are able to enjoy the simplicity, tranquility and peace of existence. The Ego and the experience of ”somebodyness” then disappear, and we remain nothing but pure, vibrating energy, Life itself.

How Higher Levels Of Consciousness May Appear In Our Life By Frank M. Wanderer Ph.D.


When we are asked what we find the most important thing in our life, the most of us would be able to answer the question. We would, naturally, come up with different answers, but that is not the point; the point is that we are able to answer. But as long as we are able to answer, we remain detached from the higher levels of Consciousness. How is that possible?

The Nature of Higher Consciousness

If we wish to find out how that is possible, we must first examine the nature of higher Consciousness. A number of people have experienced those higher levels, and there are thousands of reports about that state of Consciousness.

Still, if we penetrate deep into that experience, we find that no higher levels of Consciousness exist, only Consciousness itself. That Consciousness has only two states that we are able to experience: one identified with various forms and shapes, and one that is free of forms and shapes.

The Consciousness Identified with the Forms and Shapes

What does this identification mean? It means that we identify with a form (e. g. our name) that originally did not belong to us (we are all born without a name), but through identification this specific form has become a part of our existence.

When the Consciousness identifies with a form, the Ego appears. The Ego always means some sort of an identification, self-determination (I am a man, I am a father, I am an Englishman, I am Christian etc.) The Ego therefore rests upon our identification with things that are important for us ego. If I am able to answer the question, “What is important for me?” I am in the state of identification with the forms and shapes.

This state of Consciousness is always restrictive and exclusive. Identification is always preceded by a process of selection: this thing – this form – is important for me, whereas that one is not. We usually choose the forms and shapes that we find beautiful, good and valuable, since these are expected to make us beautiful, good and valuable people. Selection always comes hand in hand with anxiety and fear that we may loose what is important for us and, together with those things, we may loose ourselves.

The process of identification does not stop just because we have become spiritual helpers. But now different things are becoming important for us, for instance the extended state of Consciousness or the experience of the astral projection. At that state of Consciousness, we identify with these experiences, these are the factors that are important for us, they provide the identity of our spiritual Ego. Nothing has really changed, apart from the forms and shapes we identify with.

The Consciousness Free from Forms and Shapes

There are moments in everybody’s life when our identification with the forms and shapes loosens a little bit for a short while, and in that instant we may experience an entirely different state of Consciousness.

When our identification with a form ceases, a new space is generated between us and the form and we are able to see and recognize that we are not identical with that form. With the dissolution of the identification, the Ego also disappears. When we are in that state of Consciousness and we are asked what we find important in life, we are simply unable to answer the question, as everything that we formerly regarded as important vanished together with the Ego. Still, we sense that we are alive, and we did not disappear with the Ego.

What we then experience may perhaps be best termed as Being. There is only the pure existence, we are eyewitnesses, contemplating the dance of forms and shapes around us. We do not identify with anything, we are a Consciousness free of the obligation to make choices. We are free and independent of the forms and shapes and of the necessity of choosing from them. All our suffering and problems have vanished, we are surrounded by peace and tranquility.

Awakening from the Stupor of Identifications

On most occasions, one is only able to experience that state of Consciousness free of identifications for very brief periods only. This is, however, one of the most wonderful and certainly one of the most important experiences in our life. It wakes us up, in fact shakes us out of the stupor of identifications.

Once we have had that experience, our alertness will increase, and we will pay more and more attention to the present moment. When we are alert and shift the center of our existence into the ”here and now,” our identification with the forms and shapes will further loosen. Such moments may therefore appear more and more frequently in our life. As we are bound to the forms and shapes to a lesser and lesser degree, the periods and intensity of these experiences increases. In the end it will remain the only reality for us.
