Marianne Williamson: How the Universe Views Intimate Relationships

Love can be the most exhilarating human emotion one can experience. It can change life in an instant and take us places we never dreamed possible. But love can also shatter our heart, trigger old wounds and cause indescribable pain.

Both sides of the coin are reasons to celebrate, according to best-selling author, Marianne Williamson, who explained this and more, from the perspective of “A Course in Miracles,” during “The Enchanted Love Workshop: Building the Inner Temple of the Sacred and the Romantic,” which took place in Los Angeles, as well as worldwide via live streaming on the Internet.

“’The Course in Miracles’ does not claim to have a monopoly on truth,” she told the audience on the first evening of the conference. “It is based on universal, spiritual themes found at the heart of all great religious teaching. It’s not doctrine. It’s not dogma. It’s principles.”

This particular weekend conference focused on love and relationships – an area most people struggle in, no matter what their spiritual practice. Over time, many of us can see clearly where we may be heading off course in our lives, but when it comes to intimate love, “it’s so easy to be insane and think you’re not,” she said. “We get involved with romantic drama, and all the spiritual stuff goes out the window.”

Having written a book called “Enchanted Love: The Mystical Power of Intimate Relationships,” Williamson decided to run a workshop based on the Course’s view of intimate relationships, and the goal of transitioning them from ego-based to spirit-based.

“The Course says relationships are assignments made in order to increase the maximum soul growth of both people,” she explained. “It is as though a giant machine somewhere sees where you are wounded, and then picks out the person and situation in all of the universe in combination with whom you would most likely be healed.”

Looking at this from the ego’s perspective, we often believe there is one special person out there who will heal us and fill us with everything we are lacking in life. We also believe this person will never push our buttons or trigger our wounds – be it from childhood or past relationships – but instead will behave exactly as we need them to because we are so wounded, she said.

“The ego sees the assignment as someone who will give me what I think I need to compensate for the lack that exists in me. But the universe is invested in your soul growth, not in your imagined need. The universe knows you have no need other than to remember you already are and have everything,” Williamson said.

Unlike the ego, the universe’s idea of a perfect relationship is not someone who will stay away from our bruises or triggers, but actually someone who will bring our wounds to the surface in order to heal them. “To double the perfection, it will not only be a perfect assignment in which to address your wounds, but also the perfect assignment in which to address theirs,” she explained.

Intimate relationships exist to bring up all of our wounds, triggers and childhood issues. It brings shadows of the past – whether it’s our mother, father, brother, sister or ex-lover – into our current relationship, and instead of seeing the man or woman in front of us, subconsciously we are seeing the person who invalidated us, she said.

“We heal through a detox process. Sometimes you will think, ‘Wow, I haven’t had that issue in a while,’ when really it’s just that it hasn’t been triggered. It wasn’t healed, it just wasn’t brought up,” she said, explaining until we find healing, the issue will continue to show up for us. However, there are times we are meant to stay in the relationship to heal, and times where the healing needs to take place apart.

“Relationships are never over. The Course says all who meet will someday meet again until the relationship becomes holy. There are phases in a relationship where there is silence or you are not in physical proximity with one another anymore, and this can actually be very helpful,” she said. “Sometimes work is going on even more powerfully when two people are not talking. If you do the work, know that he or she is still feeling it.”

However, if we don’t do the work to heal the wounds, we will carry them into the next moment or next relationship, and will continue to attract the same circumstances until the work is done.

“It’s not that you attract a certain type of man – it’s that you are attracted to that certain type of man so you can heal,” Williamson noted.

In this video – Amoda talks about the common error on the spiritual path of elevating the mind-qualities of enlightenment while neglecting the tenderness of the heart. She invites us to end the patriarchy of ‘mind over heart’ that has been a feature of old and new spiritual teachings, by allowing ourselves to expose all the human feelings that are a part of being alive.

This discourse was given to a packed audience at the Open Circle Center in Marin, California in September 2018. (Apologies for the poor sound quality, we had a technical issue that prevented us from achieving a good audio capture.)

Technology and Compassion: A Conversation With the Dalai Lama

Posted on September 25, 2018
From how we get around to how we spend our time to how we manage our health, technology is changing our lives —not to mention economies, governments, and cities around the world. Tech has brought good to individuals and societies by, for example, democratizing access to information and lowering the cost of many products and services. But it’s also brought less-desirable effects we can’t ignore, like a rise in mental health problems and greater wealth inequality.

To keep pushing tech in a direction that will benefit humanity as a whole—rather than benefiting a select few—we must encourage open dialogues about these topics among leading figures in business, government, and spirituality.

To that end, SingularityU The Netherlands recently hosted a dialogue about compassion and technology with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The event was attended by students and tech innovators, ambassadors, members of the Dutch royal family, and other political and business leaders.

The first half of the conversation focused on robotics, telepresence, and artificial intelligence. His Holiness spoke with Tilly Lockey, a British student helping tech companies create bionic limbs, Karen Dolva, CEO of telepresence company No Isolation, and Maarten Steinbuch, faculty chair of robotics at SingularityU the Netherlands and a professor of systems and control at TU Eindhoven.

When asked what big tech companies could be doing to help spread good around the world, His Holiness pointed out that while technology has changed many aspects of life in developed countries, there is still immense suffering in less-developed nations, and tech companies should pay more attention to the poorer communities around the world.

In the second half of the event, focus switched to sickness, aging, and death. Speakers included Liz Parrish, CEO of BioViva Sciences, Kris Verburgh, faculty chair of health and medicine at SingularityU the Netherlands, Jeantine Lunshof, a bio-ethicist at MIT Media Lab, and Selma Boulmalf, a religious studies student at University of Amsterdam. Among other topics, they talked with His Holiness about longevity research and the drawbacks of trying to extend our lifespans or achieve immortality.

Both sessions were moderated by Christa Meindersma, founder and chair of the Himalaya Initiative for Culture and Society. The event served as the ceremonial opening of an exhibition called The Life of the Buddha, Path to the Present, on display in Amsterdam’s 15-century De Nieuwe Kerk church through February 2019.

In the 21st century, His Holiness said, “There is real possibility to create a happier world, peaceful world. So now we need vision. A peaceful world on the basis of a sense of oneness of humanity.”

Technology’s role in that world is being developed and refined every day, and we must maintain an ongoing awareness of its positive and negative repercussions—on everyone.

When Mind Meets Nature: Mauro Bergonzi and Shantena Sabbadini

Published on 20 Sep 2018

In a conversation from SAND Italy, Mauro Bergonzi and Shantena Sabbadini discuss how the scientific perspective has influenced our view of reality. Shantena begins with an explanation of the difference between classical and quantum physics. They describe the revolution that began with Galileo and the mathematization of nature, and the abstractions that enabled scientific experiments to be repeated – and list some of the consequences of this viewpoint, which follow from mistaking measurements for reality itself. In response to a comment that it is not just the Western mind that embraces duality, Mauro reminds us that the East had established nondual philosophies – Vedanta, Taoism, Kashmir Shaivism, Buddhism – for centuries before the West began to question the connection between logical truth and facts.

Science And NonDuality is a community inspired by timeless wisdom, informed by cutting-edge science, and grounded in personal experience. We come together in an openhearted exploration to further our individual and collective evolution. New ways of being emerge. We embody our interconnectedness and celebrate our humanity

SOUL RELATIONSHIPS – THE INTERWEAVING OF SOULS

The occurrence of soul relationships

is as natural as breathing

Julie of Light Omega

If we but knew the many souls who have come to the Earth in order to be with us in some way – some for a long time, some whose paths will cross ours only briefly – we would never feel alone in the physical or spiritual universe, for the connections of the heart and soul to these others would at all times convey to us that we are part of a group or family of souls. These are soul-friends who have incarnated with us and with whom we have often had many other-life experiences, both past and future.

Often, the world of physical reality compresses these relationships behind the closed doors of fleeting intuitive impressions, some of which peek out now and then and let us know that they are there, while some remain concealed for an entire lifetime behind degrees of difficulty we may be having with another, or behind time and circumstance that keep us apart from another when we would wish it otherwise.

Each soul incarnates with an understanding of the significant encounters it will have with those in its life with whom it will have the deepest experiences, and often it waits with a sense of longing and anticipation for this other or these others to arrive, sometimes living in a place of loneliness till then, with a wondering of where they are. Always, there is a reason for having to wait when this occurs, and always, the timing of significant soul-encounters happens when both souls have deemed a readiness to exist.

The willingness to open our eyes and the feelings of our heart in order to erase the restrictions we place on relationships by seeing others in terms of the roles they play, opens the doors to a deeper kind of understanding. With open eyes and an open heart, we are able to see past the outer reality to the inner, and in some cases to celebrate the brief but deeply heartfelt meeting we may have with a brother or sister soul. These are precious moments when they occur – moments of reunion that may then transform into the next moment of an unfoldment of what is possible – sometimes creating an ongoing reunion, sometimes, a parting of the ways.

When souls meet who have known each other before, there is an experience of ‘resonance’ that takes place that lets each know, if they are open to knowing, that something unusual is taking place on an energy level. A synergy occurs which is vibrational that lets the heart know that something powerful is going on. This kind of occurrence does not mean that we must respond in a particular way to it, for the destiny of each encounter and relationship has to be met on its own terms, and these include both the soul-level connection we may have with another, and also how the meeting fits into our present-day embodied life. Nevertheless, the awareness of having met another whom we recognize to come from the same ‘place’ as we have, is a deeply moving experience – one that many people have without knowing where the feeling comes from.

In many ways the occurrence of soul relationships is as natural as breathing. We are forever intertwined with the destinies of others, even if we remain physically alone and even if we feel painfully lonely. Nevertheless, we are united on an energy level with these others who may appear to us in dreams, or as someone whom we feel we know intimately, even though we have barely met them. This is a matter for celebration when it happens, for it is an illustration of the beauty and complexity of the spiritual universe which, with exquisite detail, interweaves the time and place of meeting of one soul with another, creating a perfection of encounter that serves the highest good of both souls, or in the case of groups of souls, the highest good of the group.

No matter where we find ourselves in life and no matter how different from our surroundings we feel we are, the souls we are meant to be with, at least for a time, are with us. Sometimes these souls serve as catalysts for a journey of self-discovery that will take us much further in a new direction than it would have if we had never encountered our surroundings, with all their perceived limitations and restrictions.

The future of soul relationships is one of greater awareness and greater choice in relation to how we are with others beyond the roles they present. Children, for example, may know themselves to have been other than the children of these particular parents in this particular lifetime; parents, similarly, may have an awareness of other relationships that have been played out with the one who is presently their child. Whereas before, such knowledge may have been baffling, we are, today, moving into a time when it will be enriching, for each will know the other as more than who they presently appear to be, and each will seek to serve the other in love and friendship, for there will no longer be anyone who is not perceived in this light.

Blessed is this time of awakening to the nature of the spiritual universe. May all beings come to recognize their oneness as souls and open to the great beauty and intimacy of a reality in which all are connected and no one is alone.
