Connecting with Coincidence :The New Science for Using Synchronicity and Serendipity in Your Life by Bernard Beitman

We’ve all experienced or heard of surprising events and unexplainable coincidences—money that seems to come from nowhere, a spontaneous idea that turns into a life-changing solution, meeting our soulmate on a flight we weren’t supposed to take, or families being reunited by “accident” after years of separation.

Often these coincidences are explained as being controlled by a higher power or pure chance. But for the first time since Carl Jung’s work, comes bold new research that explains scientifically how we can identify, understand, and perhaps even control the frequency of coincidences in our everyday lives.

Bernard Beitman, a leading expert on Coincidence Studies, proposes a greater personal responsibility which depends partly upon newly discovered “grid cells” located in the brain, near the hippocampus. But neuroscience cannot complete the entire puzzle, and in this fascinating guide, Beitman provides the missing piece. From analyzing true stories of synchronicity from around the globe and throughout history, he shares key personality characteristics and situational factors that contribute to the occurrence of meaningful coincidences in our lives. Where other books on coincidences tend to be theoretical, inspirational, or story collections only, Beitman’s book is the first to provide a scientific understanding and practical ways in which readers can use them in their own lives. He reveals:

  • How to activate your observing self so you don’t miss synchronistic moments
  • How serendipity can offer insights into solving problems or making difficult decisions
  • Why stress activates meaningful coincidences
  • Which states of mind impede our ability to experience synchronicity
  • How to interpret the meaning of a coincidence
  • Why being attuned to coincidences is a learned skill―and how to hone your sensitivity.

Dr. Bernard Beitman is the first psychiatrist since Carl Jung to attempt to systematize the study of coincidences. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia and former Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He attended Yale Medical School and completed a psychiatric residency at Stanford. Dr. Beitman has received two national awards for his psychotherapy training program and is internationally known for his research into the relationship between chest pain and panic disorder. In addition, he has edited two issues of Psychiatric Annals that focus on coincidences. Dr. Beitman is the founder of Coincidence Studies. His work with coincidences was the subject of a feature story in Men’s Health. Visit his blog at: http://www.coincider.com.

Beitman, M.D., former chair, Department of Psychiatry, University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a cast member of the upcoming feature documentary, “What Is Synchronicity?” Beitman is an award-winning psychotherapy teacher, and developer of the Weird Coincidence Scale (WCS-2), a measure of coincidence sensitivity. Using the WCS-2, he has defined some of the personality characteristics of coincidence-sensitive people.

Conversations with the Universe: How the World Speaks to Us ~ Simran Singh

Conversations with The Universe: How the World Speaks to Us reveals how repetitions, coincidence and synchronicity are part of a personal conversation from the Universe, intended to provide ease and guidance. We are not alone, nor have we been creating life experiences on our own. There is a co-creative Universal Intelligence who is very much involved and continually seeking a dialogue. The problem is not so much the life challenges, but our own individual lack of communication with our co-creator. A conversation is happening all of the time, but we must open our eyes and ears to it. When we do, an opportunity to reconnect with the lighter side of life ensues. We do not have to get wrapped up in the heaviness. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by the issues at hand, we can become aware of the answers and solutions constantly presenting themselves. The Universe wants us to be joyful, have fun, and let go. The synchronicities, symbols, and messages are always intended to guide us. They are there to make us smile, to stop to remember there is more to life than the current object of our perceptions. Instead of having to work things out, we can play them out, yielding more aligned outcomes and a greater experience. When we are able to remember the vast connection that exists, the illusions we live become more and more apparent. Greater awareness of the messages and engagement in the dialogue allows us to laugh with the heavens at ourselves at life and our seriousness.

Although Indian descent, Simran’s subtle southern accent, deep inspired wisdom, and profound life experiences provide a delightful and powerful voice for this conversation to begin taking place in the world. She reveals how our fast paced lifestyles, chaos, and challenges hold the profound elements of this very language within them.

The Secret Teachings of Plants : The Intelligence of the Heart in the Direct Perception of Nature By Stephen Harrod Buhner

Reveals the use of direct perception in understanding Nature, medicinal plants, and the healing of human disease

• Explores the techniques used by indigenous and Western peoples to learn directly from the plants themselves, including those of Henry David Thoreau, Goethe, and Masanobu Fukuoka, author of The One Straw Revolution

• Contains leading-edge information on the heart as an organ of perception

All ancient and indigenous peoples insisted their knowledge of plant medicines came from the plants themselves and not through trial-and-error experimentation. Less well known is that many Western peoples made this same assertion. There are, in fact, two modes of cognition available to all human beings–the brain-based linear and the heart-based holistic. The heart-centered mode of perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities if, as indigenous and ancient peoples asserted, the heart’s ability as an organ of perception is developed.

Author Stephen Harrod Buhner explores this second mode of perception in great detail through the work of numerous remarkable people, from Luther Burbank, who cultivated the majority of food plants we now take for granted, to the great German poet and scientist Goethe and his studies of the metamorphosis of plants. Buhner explores the commonalities among these individuals in their approach to learning from the plant world and outlines the specific steps involved. Readers will gain the tools necessary to gather information directly from the heart of Nature, to directly learn the medicinal uses of plants, to engage in diagnosis of disease, and to understand the soul-making process that such deep connection with the world engenders.

Stephen Harrod Buhner
Stephen Harrod Buhner is an Earth poet and the award-winning author of ten books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine. He comes from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, has been his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.

Stephen’s work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman’s Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America.

BEYOND KNOWING Mysteries and Messages of Death and Life from a Forensic Pathologist ~ Dr. Janis Amatuzio

Working as a medical examiner, Dr. Janis Amatuzio has found that by listening and talking to loved ones of the deceased, she can offer them a sense of closure. In doing so, she has heard — and here retells — extraordinary stories of spiritual and otherworldly events surrounding the transition between life and death.

As in her first book, Forever Ours, Dr. Amatuzio presents the amazing, heartfelt accounts told to her by grieving family members, patients, doctors, nurses, clergy, and police officers. Along with these stories, she shares her own story — reflecting on the course of her career, the bonds she has formed over the years, the lessons she has learned, and her conclusion that “Everything truly is all right.”

This powerful book honors the mystery of life and death, exploring the realms of visions, synchronicities, and communications on death’s threshold. Told in the voice of a compassionate scientist who sees death every day, these stories eloquently convey the patterns of truth Dr. Amatuzio has found in what she sees and hears. Beyond Knowing explores the wisdom the living might find in these accounts and shows how that wisdom changes lives.

Janis Amatuzio, MD, trained at the University of Minnesota, the Hennepin County Medical Center, and the Medical Examiner’s Office in Minneapolis before founding Midwest Forensic Pathology, P.A. Board-certified in anatomic, forensic, and clinical pathology, she is a recognized authority in forensic medicine and has developed many courses on topics such as death investigation, forensic nursing, and forensic medicine in mortuary science. Dr. Amatuzio serves as the medical examiner and a regional resource for multiple counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin. A dynamic speaker, she is frequently requested to speak on her experiences. She lives in Minneapolis.

11 Days in May ~ JD Messinger

11 Days in May is the story of one man’s quest to answer to the great questions:

* who am I,
* why am I here and
* where did I come from? .

After breaking his neck, leaving his body, and returning, JD Messinger experienced prophetic visions and insights. Over the course of eleven days, he takes us on a journey with a mysterious friend. The two bicker like brothers but converse like sages as they investigate the answers to thirty-six of life’s most important questions. Messinger delves deep into the inner sanctum of his mind and soul to unveil knowledge long submerged.

11 Days explains that we live in the World of Form, a box that has clouded our minds with faulty and outdated programs. Inside this box, man believes he exists to conquer, but the World of Form is not the true nature of reality. It exists within the World of Light, where matter is not solid, death is not the end, and time is an illusion. While the World of Light draws us together, the World of Form tears us apart. 11 Days reveals how scientists are people of faith, we are all agents of God, and the sixth sense is more than a movie.
