What Can Physics Tell Us About Consciousness? — Chris Fields

Published on Aug 11, 2015

Physics and particularly quantum physics are often invoked in discussions of consciousness. But what can physics actually tell us? I will first discuss what physics does not tell us: physics
does not provide any criteria with which to distinguish conscious systems from non-conscious systems. As far as physics is concerned, consciousness is like free will – it characterizes
either nothing or everything. Since we are conscious, it is reasonable to regard everything else as conscious, too. If we make this assumption, the question of interest becomes: what systems
are conscious of what? Physics is fundamentally a theory of interaction, so it can tell us a lot about this. The first thing it tells us is that being conscious of something requires expending energy. How much energy a system can expend determines how much it can be conscious of. This energy requirement has surprising consequences, some of which I will describe.

Laozi and Quantum Physics — Shantena Augusto Sabbadini

Published on Jul 30, 2015

Theoretical Physicist Sabbadini presents the quandary of Quantum
Mechanics, and draws illumination from Tao Te Ching.

Ancient and primitive cultures conceived the whole cosmos as alive and sentient. The mainstream current of our culture has moved towards an ever greater separation of matter and mind and today’s dominant scientific world view is based on an essentially materialistic representation of reality, in which consciousness is considered an epiphenomenon of purely material process. Yet it can be argued that the obstinate persistence of the so called measurement problem in quantum physics is a symptom pointing to the need to radically rethink the way in which we represent reality. This talk proposes an understanding of the quantum
measurement process in which the embodied nature of the observer plays an essential role. And it will show an amazing congruence between this world view and the cosmology
outlined in the first chapter of Laozi’s Daodejing.

Quantum Shift in the Global Brain : How the New Scientific Reality Can Change Us and Our World By Ervin Laszlo [updated July 07, 2015]

About Quantum Shift in the Global Brain

The shift from scientific materialism to a multidimensional worldview in harmony with the world’s great spiritual traditions

• Articulates humanity’s critical choice–to be the last decade of an outgoing, obsolete world, or the first of a new and viable one

• Presents a new “reality map” to guide us through the environmental, scientific, and geopolitical upheavals we are experiencing

Our world is in a Macroshift. The reality we are experiencing today is a substantially new reality–climate change, global corporations, industrialized agriculture–challenging us to change with our rapidly changing world, lest we perish.

In this book, Ervin Laszlo presents a new “reality map” to guide us through the world shifts we are experiencing–the problems, opportunities, and challenges we face individually as well as collectively–in order to help us understand what we must do during this time of great transition. Science’s cutting edge now views reality as broader, as multiple universes arising in a possibly infinite meta-universe, as well as deeper, extending into dimensions at the subatomic level. Laszlo shows that aspects of human experience that had previously been consigned to the domain of intuition and speculation are now being explored with scientific rigor and urgency. There has been a shift in the materialistic scientific view of reality toward the multidimensional worldview of multiple interconnected realities long known by the world’s great spiritual traditions. By understanding the interconnectedness of our changing world as well as our changing “map” of the world, we can navigate with insight, wisdom, and confidence.

Ervin Laszlo, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, is editor of the international periodical World Futures: The Journal of General Evolution and Chancellor-Designate of the newly formed GlobalShift University. He is the founder and president of the international think tanks the Club of Budapest and the General Evolution Research Group and the author of 83 books translated into 21 languages. He lives in Italy.

Consciousness and The Unified Field

What follows is a theoretical explanation of how energies interact in our universe to create what we know, and also what we don’t know. Some of the content is scientifically proven, while other parts of this essay are based on my intuition. This is not meant to be a purely scientific article, so bring your curiosity, and come along while I take a stab at explaining the unexplainable. Keep the parts that resonate with you, and leave the rest alone, but remember the take-home message at the end.

Energy of Consciousness – the Great Influencer

Energy is the fabric of the Universe, and all matter originates from energy. Energy is information, including thoughts, prayers, intentions, and beliefs. Regarding this, some of the highest energetic frequencies in consciousness are universal spiritual truths found in all of the sacred texts.

Consciousness is the omniscient information field that connects everyone and everything. The energy field of consciousness includes:

  • Subconscious and conscious thought forms of all humans
  • Consciousness of the soul – Higher Self
  • Consciousness of all that is created by the Divine – Universe
  • Consciousness of the Divine

Concepts in physics relating to energy are evolving based on new findings in the cosmos, which may require a complete rethinking of Einstein’s law of relativity. Not only is the concept of energy shifting on the physical plane of mathematical laws as new discoveries are made in our universe, but a major shift is occurring in global consciousness. Researchers at the Institute of HeartMath say “Humankind is in the middle of a great paradigm shift from a mentality of competition to one of cooperation.”

As the human race goes through the Great Change of transformation in consciousness to create new systems of cooperation and unity on earth, the energetic push comes from the frequencies encoded in your DNA. These frequencies include lower vibrational shadow frequencies associated with fear, and higher vibrational gift frequencies associated with love.As you transcend your fears and come into a state of unconditional love, you transform your consciousness to a higher frequency band that energizes your DNA creating profound healing in your body-mind. DNA is a biologic quantum field computer, and as such, connects you to the energies of the spiritual dimension and consciousness.

All energies influence each other, sometimes in subtle, but more often in highly significant and unusual ways. If energy waves come together in coherence forming a constructive interference pattern, they create an energy wave of higher amplitude, thus increasing the amount of energy carried by the wave. Increasing the energy of a wave has the potential to amplify its effect on matter, including your body-mind.

Quantum coherence, or coherence of energy at a subatomic level, adds the quality of entanglement. Entanglement is the ability of energy particles, such as photons, to communicate even if on opposite sides of the universe. Einstein described this phenomenon as “spooky action at a distance.” Entangled energy particles, even when separated by great distances, don’t exist in a specific state until measured, but once measured, are able to communicate their state to each other instantaneously.Einstein thought it was spooky because this happens faster than the speed of light, which violates his theory of relativity.

Energy in many forms is constantly influencing your physical body. Epigenetics is the study of how your environment affects gene expression, or how genes are turned on or off. Energetic waveforms predominating in the body are the ones that potentially have the strongest epigenetic influence. Meaning if you are constantly in a state of anger or dissatisfaction, then that prevailing emotion experienced as an energetic thought form may create an overriding epigenetic influence on how your genes are expressed. Gene expression triggered by stressful emotions can be harmful, whereas gene expression triggered by thoughts and practices inducing relaxation can be beneficial.

As a quantum intention, every thought has the potential power of prayer. This is because all energy contains information, and as an intention, it also contains consciousness. When an energetic waveform of a specific intention comes into coherence with another waveform, its impact on matter results in conscious creation.Learning how to transmute negative thought forms is a powerful way to positively influence your environment, especially your body-mind.

There are ways to create coherent waveforms in your body that positively influence core parts of you associated with intuition and non-verbal communication. The main regulator of these abilities is your heart energy field. Regular practice of creating coherent energy fields in the heart through techniques developed by HeartMath®, much like practicing to play the guitar or learning how to speak a new language, can be honed. And with regular practice, it becomes second nature.

Fractals – the Great Stabilizer

So what stabilizes all of these energy waves flying through our universe? The answer could be found in fractals, which create an efficient and structured energetic highway upon which to travel. Fractals originate as an alignment of repeating energy vectors that provide for a stable interconnectedness of all energy systems in the universe. Since these fractals are energetic in origin, and since energy influences matter, they leave their mark in matter by creating repeating patterns seen throughout nature. These repeating patterns are also found in the human body serving as a reminder that we all originated from the same source, and we are all connected.

Fractals display self-similarity with the ability for objects to exhibit the same type of structure in all scales, large or small. Fractals give sacred geometry and snowflakes their structure. You can also find fractal patterns in the branches of a tree, fronds of a plant, crystals, ocean waves, earthquakes, and even DNA. Not surprisingly, since fractals originate as energy vectors, they are also observed in coherence patterns of brain function and in heart rate variability analysis.11,12

Dark energy existing in dark matter, consists of energy vectors creating repeating fractals, and is what gives our universe energetic stability through similarity in structure. On the earth plane, the energetic influence of fractals is represented mathematically, allowing for the actual measurements of the physical components of these fractals.

Mathematical expressions of fractals are seen in the Golden ratio, Penrose tiling, and the Fibonacci sequence. The Golden ratio is a number found by dividing a line in two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is equal to the whole length divided by the longer part. Roger Penrose, a professor of mathematics and physics, established that a surface could be tiled in an asymmetrical, non-repeating pattern using five-fold symmetry with two shapes based on the Golden ratio. This pattern named Penrose tiling, and was later discovered to exist in nature as the structure of quasicrystals. The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers, and is represented in nature by the petals of a flower and the bracts of a pine cone.

The Global Scaling Theory, based on the mathematical model of logarithmic-scale invariance, explains why structures and processes in nature are fractal. The Global Scaling Research Institute located in Munich, Germany is the leading researcher of this theory, and some of its publications point to why waveforms associated with fractals might one day help explain astrology.13,14

Astrology – the Language of the Cosmos

The entire cosmos has an energetic influence on you as an individual. While the moon’s gravitational force stabilizes the earth’s rotation and influences the watery tides, lunar cycles also influence our bodies.15 But gravitational forces alone cannot account for all of the moon’s effects on human physiology. While the exact mechanisms of how the moon influences human physiology is unknown, its scientifically documented impact does make us consider how other parts of the cosmos may also affect us.

Astrologists say that the unique planetary alignment at the time of our birth provides a template upon which to base the potential impact that future planetary alignments may have on us. While many theories regarding astrology have been scientifically disproven, one must keep in mind that the laws used to disprove them don’t apply to all aspects of the cosmos. The classic example of this is how generally accepted laws of physics don’t hold true inside a black hole. This is like using the laws of physics to prove that God doesn’t exist. The laws of physics can’t account for all of the possible energies in the spiritual dimension, much less that of all the energies in our known universe.

Energy fields, including those created by planetary alignments, are made of tiny subatomic particles. Since all of the subatomic particles in existence haven’t yet been discovered, scientists and engineers built a massive particle collider, called the Large Hadron Collider, to flesh them all out. Because some subatomic particles are still unknown, science can’t mathematically account for all of the possible information- packed energies contained in astrological alignments. The poetic language of astrology is written so as to make sense of the symbolism inherent in the components of these cosmological alignments, such as trines and squares.

Consciousness, as a highly intelligent and powerful force, is the common influencer of energy in the spiritual dimension and in astrological alignments. Consciousness contains energetic information existing as multiple potentials for outcomes as far as how they may impact matter and other energies. These multiple potentials come into existence through the creation of coherence driven by consciousness. This is why people born on the same date and time can have different outcomes associated with astrological predictions based on specific planetary alignments. The unique aspects of our consciousness at any given time influences the outcome of astrological predictions due to specific resonating energy waveforms coming into contact at any point in time.

It is the combination of the unique energy contained in your consciousness that locks in the memory of the energetic combinations of the fractal energy vectors at the time of your birth. The information contained in that memory serves as the energetic template upon which the energy of future planetary alignments may potentially influence your life.

Coherence in Consciousness – the Great Facilitator

It is the energy fields of fractal vectors that provide the information highway upon which consciousness travels, and when coherence patterns are formed in these fields, you will experience deja-vu, synchronicities, and even miracles. Keep in mind that the energy of consciousness is the major player in helping to create coherence.

Human thought forms, as a part of energy in consciousness, are some of the most influential of all energies in our cosmos, much greater than that of the combined energy of all the suns in our universe. This is because thought forms always contain consciousness, and consciousness is part of the original source energy for the existence of all that is.

Learning to harness the power of your thoughts through practices like meditation, contemplation, and prayer, along with increasing high vibrational thoughts associated with unconditional love and compassion will facilitate the Great Change in global consciousness. This Great Change is simply a remembering of this universal truth – we are all One Love.

We all originated from the same source of Love that permeates everything, and beckons us to reunite to create a new energy on earth. This new energy that will make war, famine, poverty, and strife something we only read about in history books, and will make us wonder – Why did we wait so long?

A Beautiful Question: Finding Nature’s Deep Design by Frank Wilczek

Publication Date: July 14, 2015

Does the universe embody beautiful ideas?

Artists as well as scientists throughout human history have pondered this “beautiful question.” With Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek as your guide, embark on a voyage of related discoveries, from Plato and Pythagoras up to the present. Wilczek’s groundbreaking work in quantum physics was inspired by his intuition to look for a deeper order of beauty in nature. In fact, every major advance in his career came from this intuition: to assume that the universe embodies beautiful forms, forms whose hallmarks are symmetry—harmony, balance, proportion—and economy. There are other meanings of “beauty,” but this is the deep logic of the universe—and it is no accident that it is also at the heart of what we find aesthetically pleasing and inspiring.

Wilczek is hardly alone among great scientists in charting his course using beauty as his compass. As he reveals in A Beautiful Question, this has been the heart of scientific pursuit from Pythagoras, the ancient Greek who was the first to argue that “all things are number,” to Galileo, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, and into the deep waters of twentieth century physics. Though the ancients weren’t right about everything, their ardent belief in the music of the spheres has proved true down to the quantum level. Indeed, Wilczek explores just how intertwined our ideas about beauty and art are with our scientific understanding of the cosmos.

Wilczek brings us right to the edge of knowledge today, where the core insights of even the craziest quantum ideas apply principles we all understand. The equations for atoms and light are almost literally the same equations that govern musical instruments and sound; the subatomic particles that are responsible for most of our mass are determined by simple geometric symmetries. The universe itself, suggests Wilczek, seems to want to embody beautiful and elegant forms. Perhaps this force is the pure elegance of numbers, perhaps the work of a higher being, or somewhere between. Either way, we don’t depart from the infinite and infinitesimal after all; we’re profoundly connected to them, and we connect them. When we find that our sense of beauty is realized in the physical world, we are discovering something about the world, but also something about ourselves.

Gorgeously illustrated, A Beautiful Question is a mind-shifting book that braids the age-old quest for beauty and the age-old quest for truth into a thrilling synthesis. It is a dazzling and important work from one of our best thinkers, whose humor and infectious sense of wonder animate every page. Yes: The world is a work of art, and its deepest truths are ones we already feel, as if they were somehow written in our souls.

Frank Wilczek won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004 for work he did as a graduate student. His 1989 book, Longing for the Harmonies, was a New York Times notable book of the year. Wilczek is a regular contributor to Nature and Physics Today and his work has also been anthologized in Best American Science Writing and the Norton Anthology of Light Verse. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Quantum Beauty | Frank Wilczek

Does the world embody beautiful ideas? This is a question that people have thought about for a long time. Pythagoras and Plato intuited that the world should embody beautiful ideas; Newton and Maxwell demonstrated how the world could embody beautiful ideas, in specific impressive cases. Finally in the twentieth century in modern physics, and especially in quantum physics, we find a definitive answer: Yes! The world does embody beautiful ideas.

In this special lecture hosted by the Institute’s School of Mathematics, Frank Wilczek presents the intellectual history of this question and discusses how esthetic considerations continue to guide our search for ultimate physical laws.

“What Is Consciousness & Where Is It?” – a panel conversation recorded at Science and Nonduality Conference 2013 with Rudolph Tanzi, Menas Kafatos and Lothar Schäfer facilitated by Deepak Chopra

What is the fundamental activity in the universe? Although neuroscience has made
enormous progress in looking at the brain correlates of subjective and objective experience,
there is still no theory on how we experience mental or perceptual reality. Where our memories are stored? Is there a scientifically viable way to explain consciousness? Does mainstream science have the methodologies to address this question? Are there states of consciousness that go beyond waking, dreaming and sleeping? Is our current science which is based on a subject/object split equipped to answer these mysteries? What is the nature of the universe? What is the of nature awareness that makes it possible for us to experience the universe?

Spiritual Insights Into The Interpretation of Mass, Space and Time – Catherine Pepin

As above, so below—said Hermes Trismegistus. In physics, perception is limited towards the infinitesimally small by the Planck scale defined by the Heisenberg inequalities; towards the infinitely big by the speed of light and the theory of relativity. In between those two scales lies our material world, of observable objects, subject to the laws of causality and to the tyranny of Time.

Sages and mystics of all time, on the other hand, have hinted at the observation that notime is present in meditation. At first sight we could believe that causality has just simply evaporated, and that the non-dual world is non-causal. In this presentation we will see that a more beautiful hypothesis leads us to envision that in meditation, causality has become instantaneous, not a-causal. In this framework the non-dual world is super-causal rather than non-causal. This assumption will lead us to reconsider the notions of mass, space and time from a spiritual perspective.

CATHERINE PÉPIN, PH.D. : 1.Where do Quantum Physics and Nonduality Meet? 2.Science and the Big Questions

An excerpt from the interview with Catherine Pepin featured in the Science and Nonduality Anthology Vol. 5.

CATHERINE PÉPIN, PH.D. Theoretical Physicist, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Saclay, France In 2005, she received a strong spiritual call which told her that in addition to the wonders of Scientific endeavour, there is an unmistakable Otherness, a presence impalpable to the mind. She was exposed to a number of spiritual teachings and experiences, starting in June 2006 with the meeting of late Stephen Jourdain’. In 2007, she went through a Shamanic initiation involving Iboga and Ayahuasca, the African and South Amazon sacred plants known to open doors of the Spirit.

Today, she is developing her own path, and is convinced that the spiritual call she received in 2005, while she was still a fundamentally materialistic scientist, was not an accident . It was an experience of a universal longing in the human Soul for a deep and uncompromising re-union of Science and Spirit.

Science and the Big Questions

Non-Dual Conscious Realism ~ Neil Theise

We propose a generalized theory of “Non-Dual Conscious Realism” addressing the fundamental issue of consciousness. This theoretical framework posits the universing arising from an undifferentiated, non-dual field of pure conscious awareness. From within this universal consciousness emanate the complementary phenomena of Planck scale quantum vacuum and quantum foam, generating space and time, matter and energy.

Through successive, recursive, creative interactions, phenomena and entities at each level of scale self-organize into emergent phenomena and entities at each next higher scale, comprising the entire cosmos. These triadic principles of complementarity, recursion, and creative interactivity (wherein “sentience” is the special case of the biological) are reflected throughout all scales.

Though emergentist/materialist positions predominate in contemporary discourse regarding consciousness, the primacy of this non-dual conscious reality, which we emphasize is the deepest possible “panpsychist” perspective, is not contradicted by any known scientific phenomena. Also, unlike most emergentist positions, it is inclusive of the inextricable linkage between observer and observed, subject and object, decisively revealed by quantum mechanics.

Indeed, at all levels of scale above the quantum realm, quantum-like effects – such as uncertainty, complementarity, superposition, entanglement, non-locality – reflecting such interconnectivity are recognized. Corollaries of Non-Dual Conscious Realism include that:

materiality is not implicit in the universe, but is entirely a scale dependent phenomenon; the “hard problem” of qualia is subsumed by confirmation that all phenomena of the universe are qualia within consciousness; neural correlates of consciousness are not how consciousness is created, but are, rather, the ways in which the nervous systems (human or other) transduce consciousness into adaptive, species-specific perceptions and behaviors. Individual consciousness and associated qualia are part of the universal, non-dual conscious reality.

With Menas Kafatos he is formulating a panpsychist approach to the relationship between consciousness and the universe. He is a Senior Student at the Village Zendo in NYC.

What Is Entanglement Anyway? Chris Fields

Published on Mar 13, 2015
Entanglement or non-separability is the core idea of quantum theory. It is a simple idea: the universe is not a bunch of independent parts, but is rather one entity that evolves through time as one entity. That’s it. The problem is that this means there’s no such thing as causation. This is very hard to wrap your head around. Quantum theory is extraordinarily accurate, and our knowing quantum theory is why we have things like cell phones and computers. But what is quantum theory, really? Why is entanglement its primary prediction?

This talk will explain what quantum theory is. I will show that quantum theory has nothing to do with tiny particles, wave-function collapse, or Schroedinger’s cat. Quantum theory is about how observers obtain information about the world. It is, in particular, about how observers who have memories and use language obtain information about the world. It is, in other words, about how you and I interact with perfectly ordinary things like tables and chairs and each other. You will leave this talk with a new understanding of quantum theory, and a new appreciation for entanglement.

Chris Fields is an interdisciplinary information scientist interested in both the physics and the cognitive neuroscience underlying the human perception of objects as spatially and temporally bounded entities. His current research focuses on deriving quantum theory from classical information theory; he also works on cell-cell communication and cellular information processing, the role of the “unconscious mind” in creative problem solving, and early childhood development, particularly the etiology of autism-spectrum conditions. He and his wife, author and yoga teacher Alison Tinsley, recently published Meditation: If You’re Doing It, You’re Doing It Right, in which they explore the experience of meditation with meditators from many walks of life.

Dr. Fields has also been a volunteer firefighter, a visual artist, and a travel writer. He currently divides his time between Sonoma, CA and Caunes Minervois, a village in southwestern France.

The Feeling of One-ness as an Illusion ~ Wolfgang Baer

Published on Mar 11, 2015
Quantum mechanics suggest that consciousness arises in a measurement-explanatory feedback loop between our experiences and the accommodation-model we hold in our memory. If correct, what we see in front of our nose is not the real external world, nor even a mental representation of it, but rather an accommodation to external stimulation expressed in our private space-object vocabulary. The capabilities of our mental display and its vocabulary are limited by our evolutionary development and so is the world we believe to be living in. The very stake-your-life-on-it reality we live and die by will change as our mental capability evolves.

I will show how the psychological feeling of one-ness with the universe is actually an internal experience produced by an awareness of ones internal accommodation-model. This model includes both ones body and what are normally taken to be external objects. I will
argue that the feelings of love and harmony associated with one-ness are due to the recognition that even ones enemies are in fact only characters who are part of us and play their threatening roles for our own good.

I will show that one cannot logically become aware of anything outside ourselves and that the architecture of quantum theory describes the thought process of a conscious being. Entanglement is therefore largely attributed to the one-ness of our internal structure and the collapse of the wave function akin to the collapse of our knowledge of alternative possibilities when a measurement reveals the actuality of a situation. Knowing that this observer knowledge interpretation of quantum theory is discredited I will show that Bell’s theorem cannot be violated by any recorded measurement result and a flaw in the interpretation of the Aspect experiments is responsible for the popular opinion.

Transcending the Speed of Light : Consciousness, Quantum Physics, and the Fifth Dimension By Marc Seifer

A study of the new scientific understanding of consciousness and the mind as a fifth dimension of reality

• Introduces the existence of a fifth dimension–one of mind–an inner- or hyperspace where time is transcended

• Shows how the barrier of the speed of light is actually a gateway demarking the fifth dimension

Since the introduction of Descartes’ dualism in the seventeenth century, the mind and the physical world have been viewed as disconnected entities. Yet qualities of mind such as awareness, purposeful action, organization, design, and even decision-making are present within the structure of matter and within the dimensions of space and time.

The space-time continuum of scientists generally ignores the realm of the mind, though phenomena such as imaginary numbers, used by Einstein to combine space with time, are concepts that only exist in the mind.

Marc Seifer contends that the inadequacy of four-dimensional models to account for our experience of mental phenomena points to the consciousness of the mind as a higher organizing principle, a fifth dimension where thoughts are as real and quantifiable as our familiar physical world.

He shows that because thought enables us to move backward and forward through time–reflecting on the past and making plans for the future–this fifth dimension of mind breaks the laws of relativity, thereby transcending the speed of light. His extensive study of this fifth dimension ranges from relativity and ether theory to precognition, telepathy, and synchronicity, all from the perspective of the conscious universe.

Marc J. Seifer, PhD has been a handwriting expert for more than 35 years and was editor-in-chief of The Journal of the American Society of Professional Graphologists for more than a decade. He has worked for the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office and Crime Laboratory, the Department of Defense, Undersea Warfare, United Parcel Service, and numerous banks, insurance agencies, and lawyers.

He was featured on the History Channel discussing the Howard Hughes Mormon Will and on Associated Press International TV on the handwriting of bin Laden. He has lectured at Oxford University, Cambridge University, Brandeis, Cranbrook Retreat, and numerous conferences around the world. Dr. Seifer teaches psychology and forensic graphology at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.
