Synchronicity Means Seeing A Heart-Shaped World

“Where love rules there is no will to power.”– C. G. Jung

You notice a funny thing when you look at the evidence for the extension of consciousness–the mind operating beyond the body: the presence of feeling. Throughout the results of scientific experiments with people and animals looking at telepathy or other similar phenomenon, emotion is a discernible quality.

The Evidence highlights Emotion

Biologist Rupert Sheldrake (who loves designing scientific experiments to challenge the skeptical prejudices of his colleagues) has shown: that some dogs do know when their owners are coming home and demonstrate it on video; that people can feel when being stared at 60% of the time (watch the discussion with Morgan Freeman here); that telephone telepathy, knowing who’s calling, happens more often with people we’re emotionally close to (here); that family members demonstrate above average ability at card-guessing with each other, and that twins are best at it–and ironically those who don’t believe it’s possible score below average [here]!

Throughout each of these, emotion plays a role: dogs are emotionally connected to their owners and excited for their return, we feel creeped out by being stared at, and people that are close emotionally are far more likely to have an experience of consciousness as a shared field.

Feelings in Synchronicity

Both Sheldrake and the pioneering Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung noticed the statistical reality of ‘beginner’s luck’ and that with the loss of emotion came a change of luck: “a certain affective condition seems to be indispensable.” And as with beginner’s luck, feeling (whether it is conscious or unconscious) also seems to be an indispensable condition for synchronicity. Synchronicities are moments where outer events and inner states come together in meaningful parallels that are too explicit to explain away: we were just talking about someone and they call us; we break up with someone and we run into them all over town; we feel it in our heart when someone we love needs us, or is in danger; and visions of a relative who just has passed away are surprisingly common. So often at the center of those experiences is a big wad of authentic bodily–experienced feelings: love, hate, care, yearning, longing, wanting, wanting to protect. Our heartstrings seem to be the pathways that draw these experiences into our lives.

How can we understand the presence of emotion in the mystery of the extension of consciousness? To do so means radically reconsidering the way we understand our world; it might mean having to give up what you think you know. Our culture teaches us to pride ourselves on always having the right answers and leaves us ill-prepared for handling something that challenges us entirely. But previous cultures were able to consciously recognize this quality of the world and they designed whole systems of living around them.

Ancient Chinese Secret

To the culture in ancient China that produced the I Ching and the philosophy of Taoism, the world was a field in which our sincerity and inner state was tied in with the flow of events in the outer world. Taoism means “the way,” “the way of Nature,” and to this culture, synchronicity was an obviously present reality. They knew for themselves that by reflecting and working with our inner emotional truth, we became better able to move with the Nature’s flow.

“The art of life is more like navigation than warfare, for what is important is to understand the winds, the tides, the currents, the seasons, and the principles of growth and decay, so that one’s actions may use them and not fight them.”

– Alan Watts

Today our culture can consciously recognize this force. But it requires breaking through the overly-Masculine bias in us that has us reflexively seeing the world as a collection of objects, rather than as a “communion of subjects” (Thomas Berry). Synchronicity means that sometimes the world is the subject and we are the object. The Chinese saw this inter-subjectivity as living in Nature and the world as a balance of Yin and Yang, Feminine and Masculine and the metaphor of the sacred marriage is an especially appropriate one for our time. Today our dried-out, over-rational and too-linear Masculine consciousness is being winked at by something mysterious, curving and purposive–a force responding to our feeling connections with each other and breathing new meaning into our leaves. This archetypally Feminine energy is a mystery to us because we’re used to seeing the world through a Masculine lens of over-simplifications:

“As a rule the specialist’s is a purely masculine mind, an intellect to which fecundity is an alien and unnatural process; it is therefore an especially ill-adapted tool for giving rebirth to a foreign spirit. But a larger mind bears the stamp of the feminine; it is endowed with a receptive and fruitful womb which can reshape what is strange and give it a familiar form.”

C. G. Jung, Introduction to The Secret of the Golden Flower

Synchronicity calls us to exercise the “fruitful womb” inside ourselves: to hold such experiences in our mind is one thing, to hold them in our heart is something else. In this way, it falls to us to bring this wedding into being in our time, to birth the new energy, to come to embody the archetypal Feminine in the world and know in our hearts that “where love rules there is no will to power.”

When we come together to explore this new view and the questions that it brings, I invite you to consider that many of the answers may lie somewhere that you don’t expect. It is beautiful and satisfying, and even world-changing, to realize that Nature responds to the feeling connections we make with each other; we are living in a heart-shaped world! However it is something even more to be that heart! Peace.

The Fourth Mystical Law: Trust in Divine Paradox, Irony, and Synchronicity by Caroline Myss

Paradox is one of the languages of the Divine, an apparent contradiction that nonetheless contains the truth. The power of a paradox, by its very nature, cannot be captured in a single definition. Paradoxical dynamics are currents that animate the wild cards of our lives, sometimes with such a dramatic force that it gives us pause to consider, “Who could possibly have masterminded such an event?”

Ironic events along with paradoxical ones stand out in our lives, calling us to notice them. They come together with rare, once-in-a-lifetime ingredients that may never coalesce again. These facts alone beckon us to take notice that unusual forces have consciously gathered around us to make that one event happen.

How often has something happened to us that in the moment we think is devastating, only to discover six months or a year later that it was the proverbial “blessing in disguise”? Sometimes the blessing is simply that these events draw us out of our ordinary “sleeping” state; that is, they cause us to wonder about the greater cosmic map, and that’s purpose enough.

The ego is always frightened and cannot discern a blessing from a tragedy, because its only compass is its own survival. As a result, it bases every decision on either what is already knows and its familiar with or what it views as safe. Times of change are about exactly that – a need to change. But changes of circumstance are the illusion, not the intent. You are always the object of change, never your situation. When life presents you with a crossroads and you are not sure what to do, the ego will always fall back on what it has already done. The ego pulls out its resume, which is, paradoxically, exactly the wrong thing to do. Change arrives because you need to move forward, not retreat to the past.

People who look to their past will not do well, because the past is no longer relevant. We can only go forward and toward the fact – and it is a fact – that learning to rely on divine paradox and wisdom will become a great survival grace.

What you can do:

To fall into harmony with divine paradox, irony and synchronicity remember:

  • What is big is really small; what is small is really big.
  • What is frightening is really the safe path; what looks safe is your fear talking.
  • What looks like chaos is actually a future blessing in disguise.
  • Your greatest power is humility; your greatest weakness is humiliation.
The mustard seed (one clear soul) has more power than the mountain (a group of people in chaos).
  • The power of prayer and grace – knowing how to work in harmony with the cosmos – influences the whole of life, whereas tying to dominate one person destroys you.
  • Your ego – and not someone else’s – is your most ruthless adversary.

Live these truths. Take them into your life and act on them. Look for these mystical energies in your life and note that they are not accidental but represent dynamics that are cause for a conscious response.

Synchronicity: Empower Your Life with the Gift of Coincidence by Chris Mackey (Author)

Synchronicity: the uncanny and fortuitous timing of events that seems to go beyond pure chance. Synchronicity can act as a guide along our life path, helping us through challenging times and nudging us toward self-fulfillment.Psychologist Chris Mackey offers astounding case studies, alongside a lucid explanation of the brain science underlying synchronicity and many practical suggestions for working with it, from journaling and symbol analysis to dream interpretation and ideas for accessing flow. He is convinced that synchronicity has a crucial role to play in helping us “go within” and tap intoour intuitive and spiritual selves.
This book is also a passionate call for a new, more optimistic “positive psychiatry” that embraces our transcendent experiences. A 21st-century take on Jung’s legacy, this exciting new approach to synchronicity will appeal to anyone interested in the opportunities for personal development offered by altered states of consciousness.

Chris Mackey is a clinical and counselling psychologist and Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society with 35 years’ psychotherapy experience. He is the principal psychologist at Chris Mackey and Associates in Geelong (see http://chrismackey.com.au).

Chris has presented at numerous national and international scientific conferences over the past 20 years on the effectiveness of psychological therapy for psychological trauma, anxiety and depression. Chris has a particular interest in promoting more optimistic approaches to mental health.

Connecting with Coincidence :The New Science for Using Synchronicity and Serendipity in Your Life by Bernard Beitman

We’ve all experienced or heard of surprising events and unexplainable coincidences—money that seems to come from nowhere, a spontaneous idea that turns into a life-changing solution, meeting our soulmate on a flight we weren’t supposed to take, or families being reunited by “accident” after years of separation.

Often these coincidences are explained as being controlled by a higher power or pure chance. But for the first time since Carl Jung’s work, comes bold new research that explains scientifically how we can identify, understand, and perhaps even control the frequency of coincidences in our everyday lives.

Bernard Beitman, a leading expert on Coincidence Studies, proposes a greater personal responsibility which depends partly upon newly discovered “grid cells” located in the brain, near the hippocampus. But neuroscience cannot complete the entire puzzle, and in this fascinating guide, Beitman provides the missing piece. From analyzing true stories of synchronicity from around the globe and throughout history, he shares key personality characteristics and situational factors that contribute to the occurrence of meaningful coincidences in our lives. Where other books on coincidences tend to be theoretical, inspirational, or story collections only, Beitman’s book is the first to provide a scientific understanding and practical ways in which readers can use them in their own lives. He reveals:

  • How to activate your observing self so you don’t miss synchronistic moments
  • How serendipity can offer insights into solving problems or making difficult decisions
  • Why stress activates meaningful coincidences
  • Which states of mind impede our ability to experience synchronicity
  • How to interpret the meaning of a coincidence
  • Why being attuned to coincidences is a learned skill―and how to hone your sensitivity.

Dr. Bernard Beitman is the first psychiatrist since Carl Jung to attempt to systematize the study of coincidences. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia and former Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He attended Yale Medical School and completed a psychiatric residency at Stanford. Dr. Beitman has received two national awards for his psychotherapy training program and is internationally known for his research into the relationship between chest pain and panic disorder. In addition, he has edited two issues of Psychiatric Annals that focus on coincidences. Dr. Beitman is the founder of Coincidence Studies. His work with coincidences was the subject of a feature story in Men’s Health. Visit his blog at: http://www.coincider.com.

Interviewed by God: A Journey to Freedom by Beth Banning (Author)

Interviewed by God is an account of Beth Banning’s journey of spiritual awakening—her conscious connection with God and the lessons she’s learned along the way. From a very young age, Banning experienced phenomena that could only be called extraordinary: she’s received messages from spirit animals, felt kundalini energy awaken in her, and experienced dimensional shifts in her awareness that have allowed her to witness what only a few have seen. She was visited by totem animals, took ritualistic baths, and visited shamans and healers; she experienced ecstatic states and received messages; her ego mind began to battle against her higher mind.

As she experienced her spiritual journey, a small voice within guided her. With doubt as her constant companion she continued to follow her inner promptings, which led her to higher levels of truth about her connection to herself and the world and reality as we know it.

Written in a format in which the author is “interviewed by God,” the book is meant to be a mirror for the reader to reflect their own experiences back to them, and a gentle guide for those who are at the precipice of an extraordinary adventure and are either scared to jump or who hunger for answers and understanding.

Beth Banning is a best-selling author, inspirational speaker, and spiritual catalyst who lives in California with her husband, their cat, and their six pound poodle.

She was born in New York City and from a very young age could sense the feelings of people around her, felt kundalini energy running through her body, and experienced other unusual events that she didn’t understand. The well-meaning adults in her life told her she was depressed and that these experiences were just her imagination.

Growing up in this cloud of ignorance and disbelief these gifts were buried and unable to flourish and so she was left confused and lonely.

As a young adult she recognized the same sense of confusion and loneliness in others and became passionate about helping people better understand themselves and those around them.

Later in life she took this passion into her work with her husband Neill and co-founded Focused Attention, Inc. She has written numerous books, co-created the Pathway to Personal Freedom, and the Art of Conscious Connection Seminar Series.

After many years of integrating this consciousness shifting work into her own life and teaching it to others, she experienced a profound reconnection with God that turned her life upside down. This radically changed the way she perceives the world and functions in it. Beth now lives her life guided by her inner source of divine wisdom. She is committed to helping others discover this for themselves and fully experience the essence of who they truly are.

The Tao of Psychology: Synchronicity and the Self by Jean Shinoda, M.D. Bolen (Author)

Understanding the Moments That Touch and Transform Our Lives

Who hasn’t experienced that eerie coincidence, that sudden, baffling insight, that occasional flash of extrasensory perception that astonishes? Can these events be dismissed as mere chance, or do they have some deeper significance for us?

The twenty-fifth anniversary edition of this classic explores the inter-relationship between these meaningful coincidences and our intuitive sense that we are part of some deep oneness with the universe — a oneness called Tao in Eastern philosophy and synchronicity in Jungian psychology. By relating the concepts of Tao and synchronicity, Dr. Bolen reveals important links between psychology and mysticism, right brain and left, the individual and the external world. The Tao of Psychology provides the key for each individual to interpret the synchronistic events in his or her life and gives fresh insight into the relationships, dreams, and flashes of perception that transform our existence.

Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD, is a psychiatrist, a Jungian analyst, and an internationally known author and speaker. Her books include Goddesses in Everywoman, Gods in Everyman, and many others. She is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and was a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco. She lives in Marin County, California.

Jean Shinoda Bolen: Archetypal Psychology (excerpt) – A Thinking Allowed w/ Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove

NOTE: This is an excerpt from the full 90-minute DVD.
http://www.thinkingallowed.com/2jbole…

Carl Jung’s concept of synchronicity, an acausal principle, connects the ego to the larger archetypal self. This connection is like the ancient Chinese concept of the Tao in that it cannot be rationally understood. Jean Shinoda Bolen suggests that the images of the ancient dieties represent powerful projections of the psyche.

From a psychological perspective, all of the gods can be viewed as suffering from dysfunctional relationships and character disorders. By studying the myths of the gods, we can learn much about ourselves. It is by facing the truth of our lives that we can die to our past ways and enter into a new order of being.

Transcending the Speed of Light : Consciousness, Quantum Physics, and the Fifth Dimension By Marc Seifer

A study of the new scientific understanding of consciousness and the mind as a fifth dimension of reality

• Introduces the existence of a fifth dimension–one of mind–an inner- or hyperspace where time is transcended

• Shows how the barrier of the speed of light is actually a gateway demarking the fifth dimension

Since the introduction of Descartes’ dualism in the seventeenth century, the mind and the physical world have been viewed as disconnected entities. Yet qualities of mind such as awareness, purposeful action, organization, design, and even decision-making are present within the structure of matter and within the dimensions of space and time.

The space-time continuum of scientists generally ignores the realm of the mind, though phenomena such as imaginary numbers, used by Einstein to combine space with time, are concepts that only exist in the mind.

Marc Seifer contends that the inadequacy of four-dimensional models to account for our experience of mental phenomena points to the consciousness of the mind as a higher organizing principle, a fifth dimension where thoughts are as real and quantifiable as our familiar physical world.

He shows that because thought enables us to move backward and forward through time–reflecting on the past and making plans for the future–this fifth dimension of mind breaks the laws of relativity, thereby transcending the speed of light. His extensive study of this fifth dimension ranges from relativity and ether theory to precognition, telepathy, and synchronicity, all from the perspective of the conscious universe.

Marc J. Seifer, PhD has been a handwriting expert for more than 35 years and was editor-in-chief of The Journal of the American Society of Professional Graphologists for more than a decade. He has worked for the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office and Crime Laboratory, the Department of Defense, Undersea Warfare, United Parcel Service, and numerous banks, insurance agencies, and lawyers.

He was featured on the History Channel discussing the Howard Hughes Mormon Will and on Associated Press International TV on the handwriting of bin Laden. He has lectured at Oxford University, Cambridge University, Brandeis, Cranbrook Retreat, and numerous conferences around the world. Dr. Seifer teaches psychology and forensic graphology at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Deriving Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics from Consciousness

Published on Feb 23, 2015
The aim of this presentation is to derive the fundamental principles of special relativity and quantum mechanics from postulates that assume the existence of consciousness. This derivation is based on the fundamental existence of a uni ed reality. In this uni ed reality, the entanglement of systems in the physical world is a very natural and ubiquitous consequence.

We begin with the following postulate: there is one unifed entity in existence (Self), which perceives the world (itSelf) through localized perspectives, individually, one at a time. After restating that postulate in more physical terms, we arrive at both of the initial postulates for special relativity (relativity of physical law, constancy of the speed of light), as well as a fundamental property of quantum mechanics known as the single-framework rule.

From this model, we discover that light exists in a timeless and spaceless state. This result fits very nicely with the phenomenon of entanglement. Far more than an abstract concept applied only to experiments in a physicist’s lab, entanglement is a property of the universe providing connection across time and space that may have implications for everyday life. One such suggested implication is the phenomenon of synchronicity.

Entangled Minds Extrasensory Experiences In a Quantum Reality by Dean Radin, PhD [Updated Sept 14, 2014]

Is everything connected? Can we sense what’s happening to loved ones thousands of miles away? Why are we sometimes certain of a caller’s identity the instant the phone rings? Do intuitive hunches contain information about future events? Is it possible to perceive without the use of the ordinary senses?

Many people believe that such “psychic phenomena” are rare talents or divine gifts. Others don’t believe they exist at all. But the latest scientific research shows that these phenomena are both real and widespread, and are an unavoidable consequence of the interconnected, entangled physical reality we live in.

Albert Einstein called entanglement “spooky action at a distance” — the way two objects remain connected through time and space, without communicating in any conventional way, long after their initial interaction has taken place. Could a similar entanglement of minds explain our apparent psychic abilities? Dean Radin, senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, believes it might.

In this illuminating book, Radin shows how we know that psychic phenomena such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis are real, based on scientific evidence from thousands of controlled lab tests. Radin surveys the origins of this research and explores, among many topics, the collective premonitions of 9/11. He reveals the physical reality behind our uncanny telepathic experiences and intuitive hunches, and he debunks the skeptical myths surrounding them. Entangled Minds sets the stage for a rational, scientific understanding of psychic experience.

Scientist Dean Radin suggests that civilization is going through a developmental stage. Describing the world as made up of adolescent-like tribes, he says that it may take some great threat to force these tribes to work together.

In this interview Dr. Dean Radin talks with Merryn Jose about the topics of entanglement, psi phenomena in science, intention, telepathy, quantum physics and more!

Dr. Radin is Laboratory Director at the Institute of Noetic Sciences in California. He worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and GTE Laboratories on advanced Telecommunications systems, and for nearly two decades he has conducted research on psychic phenomena in academia and in three Silicon Valley think tanks.

At Stanford Research Institute he served as a scientist on a highly classified program investigating psi phenomena for the U.S. government.

His book The Conscious Universe won the 1997 Book Award from The Scientific and Medical Network, and it has been translated into eight languages. The majority of Dr. Radin’s professional career has focused on experimentally probing the far reaches of human consciousness, primarily intuition, gut feelings and psi phenomena. His interests in these topics were motivated partially by sheer scientific curiosity, but also by an appreciation that these experiences are responsible for most of the greatest inventions, artistic and scientific achievements, creative insights, and religious epiphanies throughout history. http://www.deanradin.com/NewWeb/bio.html

Dr.Radin’s new book is entitled, Entangled Minds and has appeared in the movie What The Bleep Do We Know?!- Down The Rabbit Hole Extended Director’s Cut.

Truth: My Synchromystic Journey by Niki Norlock

The journey of a Synchromystic… It guides us to the realization that all things created are divine, and that in all things we can find evidence of the love sourced creative force that birthed our physical world. It teaches us to embrace the truth that there is no separation between physical and spiritual. It helps us to understand and accept that life, in all its mystical and magical glory, is merely a representation of our purest hearts desires. Essentially, it reminds us that our most precious gift is the experience of life itself, and in the process, strips away our dependence on fear as the motivating force behind our decision making.

Raised a Christian and living a life of confusion, I was, for many years, the black sheep of a family that could not accept my views, my choices or my actions. I had grown up knowing that I did not fit in to the societal ‘box’ that had been presented to me as the ‘norm’ and so had lived a life pushing against all the things that I saw to be ‘wrong’ in our world.

In early 2009, my self-destructive cycle came to an abrupt end shortly after the passing of my most respected and treasured family elder. After what seemed to be a lifetime of loss and poor choices, I was gifted with the desire to find a better way to live. I set out to find the answers to some of the most fundamental questions about human existence. Who am I? Why am I here? – and most importantly – What is this God thing anyways? For several nights I lay awake asking for guidance; no answers came…

Then came the night when my heart led me to offer what I had never offered before; I would give up my preconceived notions, my beliefs, my fear of change and I would, without question, follow the path that was laid before me. My body was infused with radiant warmth and I drifted off to sleep knowing that life as I knew it, would never be the same. In that moment I embraced the presence of the Divine; I would from that day on, never be alone again. I woke up the next day, quit my job and two weeks later I found myself on the other side of the world, in a strange land, pen in hand, documenting the extraordinarily exciting encounters I was having with ordinary people who would ultimately be the inspiration behind my life’s work.

What followed was a magical adventure into the unknown, a synchromystic journey filled with signs, messages and divine gifts of grace. Chance encounters with remarkably wise strangers would eventually lead me to an internal place of peace and acceptance, for myself, the life I had lived, and for the world and all the potential that it holds hidden within our jaded perceptions. In the Philippines, I entered a world where faith, family and friendship were the core values, where trust in the divine was not something people struggled to attain but rather was simply a way of life. It is a world where miracles are not the exception but rather the expectation and it is there that I learned the power of forgiveness and gratitude to heal the human heart.

Truth – My Synchromystic Journey is the story of the return to innocence; an emotional exploration into self. It is all that I was, and all that I am, laid bare for all to see. It is a revealing of a deeper truth, one that we all share, buried in our untapped knowingness… That we humans, all of us, are not, never have been, and never will be, alone.

About the Author
Does it take a miracle to save a woman who has lost everything? Does God really step in and carry those who cannot or will not for the moment carry themselves? Are the prayers we scream to the heavens in our most desperate hour of need really answered?

The answers can be found in the remarkable journey of the woman who went from laying curled up on the bathroom floor praying for God to take her home, to the woman who now believes that faith in the Divine is just the beginning of this incredible adventure we call life. It is the story that takes you from a jaded and misdirected view of faith, to having an unshakable faith in God, Humanity and finally in Self and Knowing without question that all of these things are irrevocably intertwined.

After losing the majority of her immediate family to illness, losing her marriage to dis-ease, losing her freedom to the physical powers that be and finally her health to a broken spine and a broken heart there seemed no other option but a graceful exit… The Spirit however, did not agree with the flesh and her request for death was bluntly denied. In one final act of desperation she lay awake late one night and cried to the heavens ‘I give up – show me the way – lead me and I will, without question, follow’.

The next day she woke up, quit her job and two weeks later she stepped onto a plane, leaving her beloved daughter and her life behind, to land in the Philippines where life as she had never dreamed it would begin.

Niki Norlock is now ready to talk openly about the true story behind Truth – My Synchromystic Journey; revealing a side of herself she has far too long denied. In a bold, bare all tribute to those who stood behind her on her journey she is shedding light on the very real places and people in the book that was originally written as a fiction. A life no longer denied, Truth is just the first step on a monumental climb to health and happiness. She now lives secure in her understanding of self-worth. Happily residing in her dream home in the Appalachian Mountains of Quebec Canada with her husband and their family, enjoying a successful run as a co-host on the International Podcast Everyday Connection she is now ready to share the Truth about what it takes to not only choose to live, but to choose to love living when all you can do in the moment is lay on the floor and wish for death. Your Truth will set you free…

Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence by Daniel Goleman

In Focus, Psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman, author of the #1 international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, offers a groundbreaking look at today’s scarcest resource and the secret to high performance and fulfillment: attention.

Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long overdue discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset. In an era of unstoppable distractions, Goleman persuasively argues that now more than ever we must learn to sharpen focus if we are to survive in a complex world.

Goleman boils down attention research into a threesome: inner, other, and outer focus. Drawing on rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business, he shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, and explains how those who rely on Smart Practices—mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental “prosthetics” that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain greatness—excel while others do not.

DANIEL GOLEMAN is the author of the international bestsellers Emotional Intelligence, Working with Emotional Intelligence, and Social Intelligence, and the co-author of the acclaimed business bestseller Primal Leadership. He was a science reporter for the New York Times, was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and received the American Psychological Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his media writing. He lives in the Berkshires.

Daniel Goleman on Focus: The Secret to High Performance and Fulfilment

Filmed at the Royal College of Music on 25th October 2013.

Psychologist Daniel Goleman shot to fame with his groundbreaking bestseller Emotional Intelligence. The premise of the book, now widely accepted, is that raw intelligence alone is not a sure predictor of success in life. A greater role is played by ‘softer’ skills such as self-control, self-motivation, empathy and good interpersonal relationships.

Now Goleman comes to Intelligence Squared for an exclusive talk on the themes of his latest book, Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence. Attention, he will argue, is an underrated asset for high achievers in any field. Incorporating findings from neuroscience, Goleman will show why we need three kinds of focus: inner, for self-awareness; other, for the empathy that builds effective relationships; and outer, for understanding the larger systems in which organisations operate. Those who excel rely on Smart Practices such as mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and positive emotions that help improve habits, add new skills, and sustain excellence.
