Inner Peace in the Midst of War: The Strange Connection Between War and Spiritual Awakening ~ Steve Taylor Ph.D

A few years ago, while doing research for my Ph.D., I met a woman who had a profound personal transformation following traumatic experiences as a soldier.

The woman (whom I will call Jenny) was in the Canadian military for 10 years, undergoing a great deal of stress and suffering. Towards the end of the 10 years, she began to feel depressed and burnt out and was diagnosed with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). She felt that she had completely lost her sense of identity. As Jenny told me, “There was just me, on the couch, doing nothing, because I literally couldn’t do anything. I was forced to see my failure. And I had no idea who I was anymore.”

However, after about a year of medical and psychological treatment, Jenny became relatively functional again and sought out alternative treatments to help her further. After a couple of years of deliberate healing and growth through various therapies and treatments, she began to experience a shift. She had powerful ‘awakening experiences’ in which, as she describes it, “the world looked different. It was alive. It was infinite aliveness. Everything was bright. Even the space between everything. The colours were incredible and the flowers looked happy.”

Soon this developed into a state of continual well-being, in which she felt intensely present, with a strong sense of connection to nature and other human beings. Jenny summarised the shift she has experienced as follows, “When you’re present all the time every day seems full. A day seems to last for such a long time…I used to look to possessions as a way to feel better but now I don’t need to feel better. I don’t need things. I can have them, but I don’t need them.”

This is a powerful example of what I call ‘post-traumatic transformation.’ PTT (as I refer to it in short) is similar to ‘post-traumatic growth,’ when people develop in a positive way in the aftermath of traumatic experiences. However, in ‘post-traumatic transformation’, the change is more radical, and usually occurs suddenly and dramatically, in the midst of intense psychological turmoil. (I wrote about my research in my recent book Out of the Darkness.) The shift is so dramatic and so life-changing that it is often described in terms of a ‘spiritual awakening.’

The shift is often related to a diagnosis of cancer, bereavement, intense stress or depression. However, in recent years, I’ve become aware that the intense stress and turmoil of combat may be a trigger for the shift too, as it was for Jenny.

Cases from the First and Second World Wars

At the beginning of the First World War, a young aristocratic German man named Karlfried Graf Von Durckheim believed it was his patriotic duty to fight for his country. After his privileged upbringing, the horrors of the battlefield were a massive shock. He lost count of the number of deaths he witnessed, and the number of times he came close to death himself. However, the close proximity of death triggered a transformation in him. It made him aware of a deeper, spiritual part of his being. As he wrote, “When death was near and I accepted that I also might die, I realized that within myself was something that has nothing whatsoever to do with death.”

This was the beginning of a lifelong spiritual journey for Durckheim. After the war he renounced his family property and inheritance, and began to study eastern spiritual texts. And later, after the Second World War, he came across many examples of a similar transformation amongst those who had lived through its horrors. As he later stated, “There are so many people who went through the battlefields, through the concentration camps, through the bombing raids…[who] were wounded and nearly torn in pieces, and they experienced a glimpse of their eternal nature.”

One example of this I came across recently in my own research was a man called J.H. Murray, who spent three years as a prisoner of war during the Second World War. While enduring the terrible deprivation of a German concentration camp, Murray had a powerful awakening experience. He wrote about it for the first time in a memoir towards the end of his life:

As I climbed upstairs, to the dormitory, I became aware of an extraordinary sense of joy. It suffused mind and body…I had stepped out of time into timelessness…I remember seeing through the windows the barbed wire fence with its sentry towers, and the prisoners in the compound, all and each transfigured by a beauty that glowed through them, engulfing all as if from another place. Its intensity had a new dimension, so that never afterwards could I bring myself to speak of it, or write down the experience until now, when I know that my life nearing its end.

After this experience, Murray wrote letters to his family, saying that he was “happy and thoroughly well.” They thought he must have gone mad, but he told them that “I have not lost my reason, but all worries, anxieties and frustrations.” He described experiencing “an undivided mind, inner stillness, self-realisation, and a fullness that I never believed possible.”

More Recent Examples

A few years ago, I published a book called Waking From Sleep. which is a study of awakening experiences such as Murray’s – moments in which our normal awareness seems to expand and intensify, and we become aware of deeper (or higher) level of reality, and perceive a sense of harmony and meaning. Last year I received an e-mail from an American man who said he had had such an experience as a solider in Vietnam in 1968. His combat base came under heavy attack, with major casualties, and he was sure that he was going to die too. As he described it:

At one point after carrying yet another severely wounded Marine to a waiting chopper something happened to me…I came out of myself. I expanded infinitely. I disappeared. It didn’t last long but it was the most powerful experience I’ve ever had. From that moment my anxiety disappeared and I knew that everything was alright, no matter if I lived or died. The Battle of Khe Sanh lasted 77 days. I felt peaceful for the remainder of the battle. I was not wounded in those 77 days although according to Ray Stubbe in Valley of Decision we had over 2,500 Marines wounded and over 800 killed. I’ve spent the last forty-seven years trying without success to replicate that experience. I even died on an operating room table. Nothing has come close to my “awakening experience” at Khe Sanh.

I’ve recently been reading a great book called Aftershock by the UK journalist Matthew Green, which is largely an investigation into cases of PTSD in British soldiers. However, the book also describes some amazing awakening experiences during battle, and the long term spiritual growth that these led to. Green tells the story of a man called Gus, who fought in the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina in the 1980s. One day, while waiting for orders on the battlefield, Gus had a life-changing experience. As Green describes it, “As he waited for the order to advance, he felt an inexplicable sense of euphoria, as if past and future had dissolved and his personal fate was no longer of the slightest consequence. He was witnessing history, yet touching the realm of the timeless.” Gus suffered PTSD after the war, until he discovered meditation, and realised that he didn’t have to identify with his traumatic thoughts and feelings. He became a Buddhist, and in 2007 he returned to the Falklands Islands, and left a small statue of the Buddha at the site of one of the major battles of the war.

These experiences are paradoxical on many levels. It seems incredible that the brutality of war should be associated with such states of inner peace and harmony. And in a more general sense, it’s paradoxical that states of intense stress and turmoil should be so closely related to states of joy and liberation. It’s almost as if joy and despair aren’t opposites, but are somehow symbiotically related.(This relates to the question of why such experiences occur during or after combat, or in other situations of stress and turmoil. I don’t have space to offer my suggested explanation here, but see my book Out of the Darkness for details.)

OMTimes is Grateful to have connected with the film’s Director, Barnet Bain and Eckhart Tolle when they recently met at the Vancouver headquarters of Hulo Films to discuss the upcoming film.

A Conversation with Barnet Bain and Eckhart Tolle

OMTimes: How did the two of you build your interest in transformational entertainment?

Eckhart Tolle:
I love watching movies and my main life interest and my purpose in life is to bring spiritual awakening into this world, to be a vehicle for the flowering of consciousness, to help people to live more consciously with less unnecessary suffering and self-generated unhappiness, so that’s my mission in life, that’s my life purpose, so bringing together my interest in movies and my life purpose then naturally this has come together so I became interested in movies that have the power to transform consciousness.

Barnet Bain: I’ve been making spiritually themed movies for a very long time. At the beginning of my career I made a movie as a screen writer, called Jesus, or The Jesus Movie. That was the first job I ever had after film school. I was hired to write the screenplay for Warner Brothers. Jesus, has gone on to be the most widely seen movie in the world. It’s pretty unbelievable. I thought it was a great opportunity to make my way through a career and looking back, I can see that film as a piece in an ongoing puzzle that all fits together in a way that is so perfect that it never could have been planned. Long before I realized I was exploring something, that I was looking to develop something in myself, I was just naturally drawn to movies and entertainments and stories that had a core element of spiritual discovery.

Since then, I have made What Dreams May Come as a Producer and the Celestine Prophecy movie as a Writer and Producer, and Homeless to Harvard, which was nominated for three Emmies including Best Movie. And I’ve made others….

OMTimes: Barnet, what is Mindfulness to you and why is mindfulness so important today?

Barnet Bain: Mindfulness is developing an awareness of the thoughts that move through and feelings that we move through without getting drawn into the meanings or being drawn into taking action or getting sucked into the story… and then like house guests, eventually they all leave.

One thing that mindfulness practice does is it allows us to pay attention to all the thoughts and all the feelings that wander through our awareness and we become more attuned to being a container for those things and less identified with them.

So now we begin to have a relationship with all our structured imaginings and in doing so, life begins to take on, from my perspective, a more enchanted, more dreamy experience. What is possible for us begins to expand because we are not so rigidly contained by the way that our thoughts and imaginations have been structured.

Mindfulness has never been more important considering how quickly the events of the world move in such an accelerated, such a frantic time. We are battered around like a cat with a toy. Our attention goes from here, to the next thing, to the next thing and we’re triggered from one response of fear, to another one of connection, to the threat of loss. It’s just constantly, constantly in play in ways that 15, 20, 30 years ago didn’t exist because things moved at such a different cadence. And so it is more critical than ever if you believe, as we do that our experience of reality is the result of the magical alchemy of the creation of our thoughts, our beliefs, our decisions, our attitudes, our feelings. All of these are, for the most part, unconscious. Mindfulness allows us to watch these thoughts and choices and decisions without being triggered and having to take action and give meaning. And so suddenly we are able to see beyond the waterline to see the iceberg. We are seeing with x-ray glasses, the ability to see what is below the surface of the way we do life.

These are the being states, that mindfulness allows us to discover. When we discover who we are being in the moment, then the opportunity to choose up to a higher ground to a different level of response is there for the first time. A fish doesn’t know it’s in water until it throws itself on the bank and flops around for a while, and has that moment of discovery, ‘I’m not in Kansas Toto.’ Mindfulness allows us, we don’t have to flop around on the bank, it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it is for some. It’s a lot more difficult to be reactive to the world, to think that you can out-think life. There are other states of consciousness beyond thinking but mindfulness puts us in touch with the being state of who we are. And with that awareness, reality becomes a very different kind of experience. It’s not as reactive, it begins to mellow out and there is suddenly room for the miraculous.

OMTimes: The book and film promise to bring Mindfulness to a youth audience. Eckhart, why did you write the book, Milton’s Secret? How did you start out on this journey?

Eckhart Tolle: Well people had been often writing to me and saying, ‘can you not write something for children?’ I felt I needed somebody else and couldn’t quite do it myself because I never had children so it’s harder for me, never having brought up a child, to enter the universe of the child. So that’s where my co-author, Robert Friedman came in and helped.

When the suggestion came to me that I could co-author the book, I remembered all the letters and emails that I had received in the last few years from parents asking for that kind of thing, but I never really felt up to it myself. Now I’m glad it happened that way. I never went out and said ‘I want to do this.’ I never do that, I wait for things to come to me either within, or without, and I go along with it, and that’s how it happened.

More and more teachers are also bringing that state of presence. In recent times I’ve received more and more emails from teachers that they are beginning to teach presence in their classroom without necessarily calling it that or calling it anything. They are doing that not as part of the official curriculum, it’s like an underground movement, not yet officially recognized by the educational authorities, at least not as far as I know!”

OMTimes: I understand the bullying is also a key theme of the movie?


Eckhart Tolle:
Only in the last few years has there been an awareness that this is a big problem and a big source of suffering for many, many children. Of course bullying is not a new phenomenon but for a very long time nobody talked about it. I don’t know why, but suddenly, now, bullying is in the news. Perhaps it is time that there is an awareness of this, of certain unconscious patterns. These unconscious patterns become conscious and then they begin to change… so there is an awareness… quite often you read about bullying in the news and that’s why it’s in the movie… and of course the financial distress that many people are going through in this time. That is the reality of millions of people or the fear or the uncertainty about economic situation and the fear that goes with it if you are not present you can constantly be in that state of fearful anticipation. What might happen to your job… that you might lose your job or you might not be able to pay your mortgage anymore… and all kinds of dreadful things could happen. All of this reflected in the movie as that is the daily reality for all sorts of people. Of course that wasn’t in the book, but I’m glad that’s in the screenplay.

OMTimes: We’ve heard a lot about the film, the bully, the Grandfather and, of course, Milton. But what is the message?

Eckhart Tolle: The central message is that it is possible to live in a different state of consciousness. A state of consciousness that does not generate unnecessary unhappiness and suffering and anxiety. So that is the underlying theme of the movie that is what it is about. And that’s why it is transformational.

BARNET BAIN As a filmmaker and radio broadcaster I’m attracted to the deepest truths that affect humanity; stories that inspire hope and vision and model new responses to the challenges of being alive in a world becoming more uncertain and less civil every day.

When Eckhart Tolle agreed to let me to film his story Milton’s Secret, I didn’t hesitate. I leapt at the chance. I have made a life’s work of stewarding innovative projects that celebrate the human spirit, but I am especially grateful to Eckhart and Robert Friedman for entrusting me to make their story about mindful awareness ring true to a dedicated readership that has purchased more than 15 million of Eckhart’s bestselling books to date, and for the opportunity to present mindfulness in a mainstream motion picture for the first time ever.

The OVERALL LOOK of the movie will be Magical, Playful, but Stressed. Reference – Magical Realist paintings of George Tooker. We should immediately get a sense of the chaotic world in every shot. For example – not just background extras, but a mom dealing with a toddler’s tantrum, or distraught motorists venting road rage. It is a world full of blocked personal urges; impersonal phone trees, indifferent service, and systemic frustration. Recently, at the airport parking lot in Montreal, I encountered a young woman trying to find someone – anyone to help her in the exit cue. There was not an attendant anywhere. The machine had taken her money, and the intercom was broken. When I found her she was in tears. “You could be dead and dying,” she lamented, “and no one would notice. That’s progress?”

So this is the environment of our movie – it is the kind of imagery that is generated from a systemic falling away of life as we’ve known it. It is definitely NOT Disneyland.

We will tell this beautiful story, and at the same time inspire as many people as we can to stop stressing and start living! I am proud to be given the opportunity to make this movie, and to have Hulo Films as collaborators.

Awakening Child: A journey of inner transformation through teaching your child mindfulness and compassion ~ Heather Grace MacKenzie

The lives we lead, particularly in the Western world, are technologically overburdened and spiritually impoverished. Our children can tell us the various merits of different operating systems for electronic devices, but are rarely in touch with how different emotions are experienced in the body, or how it feels to bring kindness to a moment of difficulty. They are bombarded almost constantly with information at a rate that mankind even 50 years ago would have struggled to begin to comprehend, and mental illness is at an all-time high. Research indicates that one of every four adolescents will have an episode of major depression during high school, with the average age of onset being 14 years of age. The human race is at a tipping point, and we have no sane choice but to begin to awaken the capacities within us that have too-long lain dormant. We can choose to lead a child towards awakening, and thus awaken ourselves.

Heather Grace MacKenzie was brought up on the Scottish Isle of Islay, daughter of a farmer and a conservationist. She is a Mindfulness Teacher, Reiki Master and Empowerment Coach. Heather has taught meditation and mindfulness to her own three children and her two step-children as well as children of all ages and stages in both family and school settings.

With the backing of the Mindfulness Association, founded by Rob Nairn, she is currently working on creating and evaluating a mindfulness course for secondary school students that is based on the Mindfulness Association’s Mindful Based Living Course (MBLC), as part of her studies for a PhD in Education with Aberdeen University. She is author of the six-volume Sounds True series, Contemplations, Prayers, and Living Wisdom; a poetry collection, Mother of God Similar to Fire, a collaboration with iconographer, William Hart McNichols; God of Love: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, which was named the winner of the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award for Religion and one of the Best Spiritual Books of 2012 by the website Spirituality & Practice, and won the 2014 Nautilus Gold Award for Religion and Spirituality in the Western Traditions, and her newest book is Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation.

Daughter of the counter-culture, Starr was born in New York in 1961 to secular Jewish parents who challenged institutionalized religion and were active in the anti-war protest movement of the Vietnam era. In 1972, the family embarked on an extended road trip that led them to settle in the mountains of Taos, New Mexico. There, they embraced an alternative, “back-to-the-land” lifestyle, in a communal effort to live simply and sustainably, values that remain important to Starr to this day.

As a teenager, Starr lived at the Lama Foundation, an intentional spiritual community in New Mexico that has honored the world’s spiritual traditions since its inception in 1968. The foundation’s focus has always rested on the mystical heart of each path, and Starr was trained from an early age to recognize and celebrate the interconnections between and among all faiths.

Formerly an adjunct professor of philosophy and world religions at the University of New Mexico for 20 years, Starr is a certified grief counselor and speaks and teaches nationally and internationally on the teachings of the mystics, contemplative practice, and grief as a spiritual practice. The Power of Awareness ~ Richard Moss

Any story you tell yourself about who you are, any belief you have, any feeling you are aware of, is only an object of your larger consciousness. You, in your essence, are always something that experiences all these and remains more complete than any of them. When you realize that you are inherently larger than any feeling that enters your awareness, this very awareness will change the feeling, and it will release its grip on you.

Similarly, ideas that you have about yourself are relative, not absolute truths. If you simply look at them and do not let them lead you into further thinking, they will give way and leave your mind open and silent. There is always a relationship between who we believe or feel ourselves to be and something else, the Self that is our larger awareness.

In awakening to this Self-me relationship, we begin to be present with our experience in a new way. We learn to consciously hold our thoughts and feelings in our own larger fields of awareness. Then, even if we are troubled and confused, this non-reactive quality of presence to ourselves allows us to restore ourselves to a sense of wholeness. This is the power of awareness.

Sensation and Perception: Our Original Consciousness

The great Indian sage Ramana Maharshi said that if we want to know our true selves, we must “go back by the way that we have come.” Our original state of consciousness in childhood is not one of being a separate entity with our own thoughts and sensations, but rather is a relatively undifferentiated domain of sensation and perception.

Our parents, having already reached the developmental stage of separate-self consciousness, provide the model by which we begin to develop our own sense of the separate self.

But when we take the developmental step into the consciousness of the separate self and leave behind the universe of immediacy and undifferentiated sensations, as a consequence we also become identified with our sensations. Who is happy? Me. Who is angry, tired, frustrated . . . ? Me. Our feelings acquire names, however, and at the same time, we are defined by those feelings.

The same is true with perception: we may not feel that the sunshine on the trees is me, but we cannot identify it without simultaneously existing as a separate me. In psychological and philosophical theory, this level of consciousness is called “subject-object.” It is the level of ego awareness where most human development stops. We are aware as me, we react as me, we defend as me, we desire as me, but we are not aware of the true self. It is the true self that looks at all we think, do, and experience, including our sense of me. In this looking, a relationship is created that has the power to transform our experience of ourselves and our worlds.

Throughout our lives, the moment we bring our awareness fully into the Now, we enter the domain of the true self, and our immediate conscious reality is once again that of sensation and perception. As I sit in the park, the sunlight brightens the leaves and casts shadows on the ground. I have a feeling of contentment. And as long as “I” don’t create stories about what I am seeing or about the fact that I am feeling content, which leads me away from my immediate experience, what I experience remains simply perception and sensation. The same is true for any feeling, any emotion. In the Now, it is just what it is. In the Now, I “go back” to my original awareness “by the way that [I] have come.” When we directly perceive and experience whatever is present in our larger fields of awareness, it is possible to have a relationship with it without becoming lost in it or defined by it.

Exercising the Power of Awareness

We exercise the power of awareness and strengthen our spiritual muscle by bringing ourselves, over and over again, into the immediate present. To do so, we must become present with what we are feeling and thinking. We can turn our attention directly toward what we are experiencing instead of staying enmeshed in a feeling or blindly accepting our beliefs about ourselves.

It makes all the difference in the world whether we are caught in a negative emotion and say, “I am sad, angry, lonely,” and so on, or are able to recognize, at that moment, “Here am I, all wound up in sensations of resentment. Here am I, fuming with anger.” Awareness of our sensations is not the same as identifying with our thoughts or feelings. Every movement back to present-moment awareness grounds us in the body and opens the connection to our larger awareness.

Even the smallest movement toward exercising the power of awareness, instead of collapsing our larger awareness into our thoughts and feelings and thereby becoming identified with them, restores us to a more complete consciousness. It gives us the power to start from a fresh, open, less conditioned relationship to our experience. This doesn’t necessarily mean that our problems disappear. But as we exercise the power of awareness, our reflexive reactivity diminishes. We respond from a state of greater presence. When we collapse into our feelings, we lose this capacity. We default into me, and this limited self seems like the whole of who we are. Then we have no choice but to react because we feel as if we must defend ourselves.

The Fundamental Relationship

What are we actually doing when we bring our awareness fully into the present and realize “Here am I . . . ”? We are moving into a more spacious awareness and thus creating conscious distance from what we are experiencing. At the same time, we are opening toward our immediate experience to see it as it is, to see it fully, to invite it to reveal itself more completely to us. We are seeing as objectively as we can, without reacting or judging. This lets us more completely realize what we are actually feeling or sensing; we do not merely remain in our heads, interpreting and analyzing.

It is important to point out that moving our awareness into the Now and thereby gaining distance from our feelings and thoughts is not dissociation. A frequent mistake people make with Eastern meditation practices is to try to rise above and detach from an experience, especially whenever the experience is considered negative. To exercise the power of awareness, we are required to become more present in our experiences without losing our larger awareness. With this quality of attention, we gain true understanding. We naturally begin to respond to our experiences in the most appropriate and intelligent ways.

This intimate viewing of ourselves by our awareness is the most fundamental of all relationships. We create the possibility of a conscious, empathetic connection between me (or self) and our true selves, or what is alternatively referred to as the Self. The personal self that we experience as ourselves is held, seen, and felt deeply by that, which will never reject me, never turn away, never judge me. It can see us judging, attacking ourselves, creating our own misery; but it does not judge even this. It is simply present with me.

This presence need not be merely neutral or indifferent. We can let it be our trusted friend, like the Persian mystic poets Hafiz and Rumi did when they referred to it as the “Guest” or the “Beloved,” to whom they offered themselves and who always received them.

The key to cultivating the healing potential of the self-Self relationship is the quality of our attention — the steadiness, gentleness, and acceptance of the “gaze” we turn toward ourselves. We must be truly willing to experience our feelings and clearly see our thoughts without reaction, allowing the moment to be exactly as it is without defending ourselves against these feelings and thoughts, without our minds moving away into further thought. Then that which transcends our capacity to name or categorize it in any way, is present to us and has the same accepting quality that we present to ourselves. This is also the essence of meditation and prayer. By keeping our attention in the present moment, we can become transparent to what is transcendent. It is the Self’s profoundly empathetic acceptance of self that ultimately sustains us when we face our deepest fears, including even our egos’ primal terror, nonbeing.
